Computer freezing when...

...I attempt to insatll MSN messenger and Real Player. I mean it completly locks up. I have to unplug the power. ( I know this is not recommended, but after waiting an hour to see if it would right itself it was the only option.) I have completly scanned my files for any conflicting program but found nothing. Is there someone who has experienced this or could direct me to somewhere that the solution might lay. I am running XP home on a Dell platform. Thanks in advance Iain

I assume you mean that if you try and install either of MSN or RP it locks up during the install process.

Have you made sure you have turned off your virus checker whist doing the install as they can cause program installs to fail?

Also have you tried to install them whilst in Safe Mode?

 

I haven't tried to install in safe mode, but the only way I could uninstall MSN was, in fact, in safe mode! Or logging on as the administrator. Logging in as me caused the computer to lock up again. It is a bizzare problem and no-one has been able to come up with an answer that works.....yet. Thanks for the reply, Iain

 

i recently had a lot of problems unistalling MSN. Then I realized 2 things.
1. the MSN program on my computer was both in the add/remove programs area AND the remove windows components section. I uninstalled in both places and then moved to
2. My Msn came as an add on to my Verizon service.
Verizon had 3 or 4 of it's on programs on my system so I deleted all of them. I was then able to use IE to download msn from the net. It works exceptionally well now.

By the way, if you had your parental controls set to control all browsers when you uninstalled, that could have started your problems.
