Yes, I play my games, when I play them, on a computer still.

Every 6 months or so, I look for a new adventure game. Mimsy turned me on to Steam. I love that site for buying games.

Usually, I'd start my search on Gamespot because their search feature was great and let you filter buy genre, rating, etc. I just went there and they've changed the whole site....as far as I'm concerned, for the absolute worst I've seen for any site revamp. Tons of complaints along those lines when I looked it up online thinking I was doing something wrong. Weird if you ask me. I won't be going back.

Anyway, I went to Steam next and found this game: The Stanley Parable. It got really good reviews across the board and looks so strange. I think I'm going to check it out.

Anyone ever heard of it, or what games are you playing?

Laura, I stopped using Gamespot for pretty much the same reason you did. If you're looking for good game suggestions, you might find this site helpful for finding good games at low prices: http://isthereanydeal.com/

Through them I got my hands on Northmark: Hour of the Wolf, that I'm enjoying on PC. Then the Guy suggested I try out Magic: the Gathering 2014 on my droidified Touchpad, and it's dangerously addictive, so now I'm playing that as well. :)

Please let me know how you like The Stanley Parable! It looks absolutely fascinating.

I stopped using Gamespot too since the site was reorganised too, the main feature I liked was the Top games list that listed every game for every platform listed by their score going back to like 97'. It's how I decided which game to buy after cross checking it with IGN.

Top games is now 10 chart games they wish to promote.:confused

Yeah I have heard and played it shortly, it was a Free miniature mod for half life 2. I didn't get into it due to the lack of combat and being too abstract, I don't like playing games more than once and the Stanley Parable has literally dozens of endings, I think you can finish the game in 5 mins or spend hours looking for different jokes, paths and endings.

If you have a copy of half life 2 you can still download the mod for free but it's shorter and less polished than the standalone.

    Games I've just finished

Uncharted drakes deception PS3 8/10 good game but too easy
Tomb raider PC 9/10 good adventure game
Infamous PS3 9/10 really good super hero game.
The last of Us PS3 9/10 The most cinematic game I've ever played, post apocalyptic adventure game.
Splinter cell blacklist PC 9/10 awesome stealth combat
Saints row 3 and 4 PC both lots of fun but too easy 9/10

Even of by some twisted plot of fate we mange to ignore the fact that Ellie is being one of the best female characters of all time (because she is a great character who also happens to be female), the rest of this game is so brilliant it deserves every single award it won, and a few additional ones as well.

The Last of Us is pure genius.

    She was amazing.

I actually started to empathise with her half way through and almost treat her like a human, I remember seeing her playing darts for the first time in probably her life with a new friend and instead of continuing with the game I stopped and let her have some fun:-D

You'd have to be pretty stone cold not to like or want to protect her.

Only problems with the game IMO is it's a little dark and unhappy but it is the end of the world:-D

Aim assist is forced on and cannot be disabled, this spoiled my second playthrough on the hardest or survivor difficulty, the aim assist kicks in when it feels like it and starts tracking the heads of the bad guys, then without warning turns off and gives you back control, it makes it almost impossible to land well placed head shots unless you work with the aim assist and only fire when it kicks in.

Such a shame this is my closing comment on one of the best games I've ever played.

Adventure game is kind of a broad category, covering just about anything, from Legend of Zelda to Leisure Suit Larry. Or Myst to Monkey Island.

I'd also recommend checking out GamersGate and GoG (GoodOldGames). Sometimes you find Steam games on GG cheaper than on Steam.

    I couldn't get on the site...too young. :-D

    Seriously...looks cool.

Looks a little like a Dungeons and Dragons with the cards? Is that what I'm thinking of. I love how the graphics look on games now.

Cool site. Thanks, Mims. I like how they pool all the sites for the best price.

Yeah, I have no idea what Gamespot was thinking other than they are getting paid by some game makers to get rid of the genre/list filtering. Its got to be monetary, because it's not functional in the least.

The Last of Us looks incredible. I don't play on Playstation though. :-/

I play maybe one game a year or a couple if I find them. I've never played one twice. Thinking I will try the Parable one though.

Yep....I prefer the point and click ones like Myst, The Longest Journey. The only one with any fighting in it that I liked (but didn't finish) was Tomb Raider. I don't like when I can die. lol

    I'll check the sites out.

I would recommend Mount & Blade: Warband.
You can also find it on Steam, usually goes on sale every couple months for very cheap.
    Multiplayer is great fun.

If you like singleplayer, they have very great mods that I would recommend to play instead of the original Native version.

This mod is the best for singleplayer

Thanks. :) I don't play multiplayer games although I've heard that they are fun.

I just downloaded The Stanley Parable onto my new laptop that came today...woohoo! Like Christmas morning all over again. The game was even a daily special. I got it for 40% off.

Give Minecraft a try. It's tons of fun and you can play in Creative mode, which gives you infinite resources and makes you invincible, so you can build things and fly around. Or in survival with the difficulty set to peaceful so you only die if you do something silly, like miss a jump or fall into lava.

Okay...well, this game is not quite what I thought it would be. I think I agree with Rikky's evaluation. It's very abstract. lol...one of my endings broke the game. :-D That was actually kind of funny. It adapts to you not listening and will throw little jokes in there. It gets annoyed with you if you go get a drink or something and let it sit in one spot for too long.

There's some deep meaning in the game.

It's just not goal oriented enough for me...at least on a not so abstract level. I'm glad I only paid 8 bucks for it.

I think I'll look for another game. I may give this one a few more goes...see where it leads.

You might try Planescape Torment. It's very story heavy, very combat light, and you can't technically die. You die, but then come back to life, which is part of the story.

Wow...It's gotten great reviews. Thanks. I put it in my wishlist so I'd remember it. I just downloaded the first of the Gabriel Knight games. I'd never played them so figured I'd give it a try.

I did find in my research that in November the sequel to The Longest Journey is coming out. I'm pretty excited about that.

Fair warning on Torment: Combat not common, but tricky. It uses 2nd Edition AD&D rules, and stays very true to the original system. Absolutely brilliant story and characters though. Gog.com has it DRM-free.
