Try going to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R180772 and look for a setup.exe file and double click it to begin setup.

its not in there any other ideas? is it possible to extract files off my vista disc and fix the corrupt files that are causing this issue or do I have to do a full re-install....

Try right clicking the exe and running as Administrator. [I just tried it running in normal mode and got the same quick command prompt which usually indicates it is a permissions issue]

right clicked and tried as admins....still the black dos box pops up and go away with in seconds....anything else I can do?

You can try the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver here. First driver listed. I tried to open the exe file from Dell with Winrar but I could not extract the files. Maybe sach2 has some ideas on the Dell driver. Wait for his reply before installing the Realtek driver.

ok i will wait for his reply but what gets me is my pc is running real good right now other than the sound being messed up.....

I think the driver from Dell is corrupt. I could not extract it to a folder in XP and when I tried to extract files with UNIExtract, it said it was an invalid PE file. I checked the driver I referenced in post #15 from Realtek and it supports your ALC888 chip so try downloading that and installing it as admin.

i'm starting to think something is messing with the detection of the sound device because I also tried disabling the onboard sound and putting in a brand new sound card only to have it not work...

a solution from someone and I am paying them something via paypal I just dont want to reinstall, could mother board drivers do it?

    Hello,
Do you still have the new sound board installed. This may have a different driver that the one for the onboard sound chip. Can you take out the sound card and enable onboard sound and then try to reinstall the driver? Also, you may want to try the motherboard chip drivers as you stated. When you go into device manager do you see any yellow exclamation points? Hopefully sach2 has some other ideas.

forgot to mention I did take out the sound card and enable onboard audio but his still keeps happening,It may have been a virus/trojan but the systems showing clean now.

    Hello,
sach2 may be around to help. Other than those chipset drivers, I am out of ideas.

If you click the Windows Icon in the taskbar, type in "dxdiag" (no quotes) in the search box and hit enter, it will run through some tests for sound and possibly give you a idea of what files are corrupt or missing.

in the direct x box labled sound it says...

No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer.
    it says

but my cousin said he had a similar situation and it was virus related that a programwas running disabling his sound and printer...any ideas?

how do I go about updating my motherboard drivers, could this help, maybe it isnt seeing my soundcard?

The motherboard chip set drivers for your computer are here. There is a possibility is could help. After updating the chipset drivers, try reinstalling the audio drivers.

Follow the installation instructions in the drop down box.

Just to be sure. The service tag for your computer says you are running Vista 32bit. Open System by clicking the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.Under System, you can view the system type. It should say 32bit.

    Hi

Did you run the steps that where posted earlier dealing with the Malware Removal Guide and then start a new thread in the malware forum and attach the logs gained as you may still have some malware components on your PC that could block drivers or the device working correctly.

Also did you run the chipset driver and steps listed by tgell 2 posts up? if you did please do let us know how you got on (always best to when someone gives you steps or ideas to follow, reply stating you did then if it worked or not as we need to know if you have completed a set step, otherwise diagnosing your problem could take ages), did it change anything, did you get any errors... if so what where they etc

Open Device Manager and see if you have any devices with yellow ! marks on them, if you do what are they?

Personally I think you need to run the malware guide and have one of our malware experts here rule malware as the cause, then once giving the all clear we can start to see if drivers etc are the cause.

I went step by step on the malware removal guide and did it all correctly, still no sound,I have been reading alot on different posts about similar issues like I am having and someone mention that sound can be disabled in the registry,if so where is the location at I know how to run regedit etc...but maybe something is disabling my sound card slot or drivers,my wifes about to cry.

As Halo said, did you start a new thread in the Malware Removal Forum. Even though those scans you did came up clean, there may be something that a Malware Expert will notice that may indicate that your computer is still infected. After they have taken a look at the logs you generate, and everything comes out clean, then return here and somebody will help. I have run out of ideas myself.

Just a couple of questions though.

Did you try to install the chipset drivers?
Did you have any yellow exclamation marks next to any hardware in your Device Manager?

    Hi

Please do as tgell mentions above and actually attach your logs in a new thread in the malware forum, I would also run the guide again to get fresh logs first, mainly as you may have been trying various things to fix this and the data in the logs may have changed.

Malware is a high probability as to the cause of your audio issue, and should be ruled out first as to fix this without knowing your malware free may just take longer to fix.

Installing the Chipset and rebooting then installing the Audio driver again may help, but you'll need to tell us of any issues when installing and if in Device Manager you have any yellow ! marks by any devices and what once.

Indeed their are places in the registry HKLM\SYSTEM\................\AudioSrv Hive (not entered the full location as it may not be the fix yet) that could have a setting thats wrong, but editing the registry can if not done correctly or editing the wrong KEY may make things worse, their are also settings in Group Policy that can disable Audio, but again changing settings if the actual cause is malware could make things worse.

We just wish to help you, but you really do need to follow our advice as going on of tangents may make things worse, at the end of the day the choice is yours to follow our advice or not.

    Hi

Do remember to start a new thread in the malware forum and attach the logs to that one and not this one, then once they give you the all clear pop back in this thread if the audio is not working still.
