    G'day guys

I got home from work last night and there had been a power blackout throughout the day and my modem (which was 5 years old and already on the way out), was DEAD..... (there had been storms out here apparently)...

So I installed a new modem, which is great and the comp is fine BUT... it keeps freezing up on me ........

Could this be because of the power surge/failure or a virus??

I run NIS and AV, Adaware, and CCleaner

I have checked my processes and the ONLY thing I can see that is there that wasn't before is rundll32.exe......

I know this can be a suss thingie but I have ended it's arse but the comp still freezes.....

Ohhhhhhhh it seems to freeze up when I have
    1. More than two things running
    2. Trying to view a photo
    3. Only since I installed this new modem... (Win Lucent internal)

yeah yeah.. I don't have Broadband here.. waaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

    ANY suggestions would be appreciated............

    XOXO

If you really suspect a virus, visit the spyware forum.
If you suspect the modem, try taking it out, and attempt the things that normally cause a freeze (open 2 things, or a picture)

You say your modem was 5 years old. I take this to mean that the system is at least that old? If so, have you ever changed your CMOS battery? Replacing a dying CMOS battery is the cheapest, easiest step to try to resolve general system instability. For $5, its usually worth a try. CMOS batteries are only supposed to last 3-5 years.

this prob sound similar to the one i have had with Gigabyte MoBo's your computer will lock-up refuse to boot, beep nosensicly every time the bios is flashed, updated or in your case currupted?
Try reseting your cmos by removing the battery for 3mins or remove and short the terminals for 10seconds then on re-boot load your fail safe bios settings(this is important), then reboot and re-enter the bios and make your bios adjustments to suit. Goodluck

No the computer was brand new 12 months ago P4 3.2 blah blah... never had a hiccup... until now

So far it has only frozen when on the Net.... I haven't been able to replicate it whilst not connected.

I guess I can try and borrow another modem to eliminate that I suppose, but maybe it did shit itself with the power surge etc....

I'll try resetting the CMOS (not really understanding your instructions though).. and maybe replacing the battery as requested...

Thanks for all your help guys

    XOXO

    OK Two more thingies

    1. When I start the comp and the WinXp themes yells away, it actually hiccups just before the end. (never use to)........

    2. My Nortons AV is taking about 3-4 mins to refresh/load etc when it is normally a few secs??..

BUT......... having said that. SINCE my initial prob I have TOTALLY removed nortons/symantec and reinstalled (cause my three months was up)....... so

I remember in the OLD days that comps use to freeze cause of lack of memory......

er........ so culd something be sapping on my comp????

    XOXOXO
