Greetings, hopefully this is a common problem. My computer seems to freeze randomly while I am using it. I don't think I am using it that hard. I have quicken, Firefox, Edge and email running about all of the time. Then if I try to open another tab, or read an email the computer freezes.

I started opening the "Resource Monitor" to take a look and I can see that my CPU, Disk and Network all peg to the top.. I have 12 Gig Ram and AMD Athlon processor that is 3.1GHZ if I read that correctly.

My local internet is slow here. On a good day I get 5MBPS download. I have removed from startup anything that uses the internet thinking that might be part of my problems.

What I need is a starting point. What is using all of my resources? Now I am at about 80% CPU with Edge (27) at the top of the list, followed by Chrome (13) Network pegs for a few seconds, then idles back down as well as the Disk. It is a Solid State Drive that has 623 gig free space.

    Thanks

Your tagline says Windows XP Pro SP3 Firefox.
Since you use Edge, I assume you are running Windows 10. What build?
When you open Task Manager, what are the top 3 entries for using resources?

You mentioned Firefox and Edge then mentioned Chrome. Do you have 3 browsers open all the time?

I went to another site where there was a post complaining about Chrome being a resource hog, then lead me here

If you have Chrome open, close it, then go into task manager and kill all its running processes. In the past, Chrome had the annoying habit of still running its processes after it was closed.
Note: I don't have Chrome installed on any Windows computer. It come with android but I always install 2 or 3 other browsers and use them instead of Chrome.

    Win 10: Version 1903 Build:18362.295
Top Three under the processes tab are Edge, Desktop windows manager Resource and performance monitor sorted by CPU
Sorted by memory are Edge, Emisoft virus protection and Chrome

And yes, right now I have Firefox, Edge and Chrome open. Not actively using any of them except Firefox for this forum.

Remind me to change my tagline. OOps

Why do you need to have 3 browsers open at the same time?

Have you run any memory diagnostics on your computer? It could be that you have a bad RAM chip at the upper end of the memory. The computer works fine until memory fills up and it tries to use that chip, and then it freezes.

I don't need to have three browsers, I want to. And some times even with only one browser open it has the same problem.

No I haven't done any memory diagnostics on this computer.

PS< I closed the other two browsers and will see how the CPU usage goes. Thanks

I downloaded GFX Memory Speed Benchmark. I didn't see it return any errors. Is there a better test? I am running only the browser Firefox and the CPU is at about 20%.. The network still spikes and I just saw the CPU spike also.

I did find and run the Windows Memory test that is built in. There were no memory errors detected.
