Hi; I am runing Windows XP Home edition ver 2002 SP3 on an e machines computer T3414 with a Celeron(R) CPU 3.06 GHz, 704 MB of RAM. 4 weeks ago the computer started restarting on its own and also some virus scans started to run from a program I didn't even have. The last thing done to it was to run an update from limewire. I have an internet service with ATT yahoo which also includes antivirus and antispyware. During one of the scans from ATT it said it found several infections and I had to pay for the service in order to remove them. I ran all the scans and attached the logs.

Thank you in advance for your help

Fortunately most of malware was removed by the scans...:)

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Lets do this:

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)"
    Viewpoint Media Player"
    Viewpoint Toolbar

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it(Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

TimW thank you vry much for your help. The computer is doing much better; the scans are gone. The machine still restarts itself but not as often as before. When it comes back on it says that a serious error happened. The ATT virus scan says I am still infected with a virus and to remove it I would have to buy a license. I think this is just a marketing strategy.

I am attaching the logs as requested and hopefully the shutting down will stop.

    Thanks again

ATT virus ? What is that? Your logs are clean...so please tell me what program you are referring to and if it is asking you to buy a license, you should uninstall it as it is probably fake.

Thanks again TimW. I am refering to the anti virus program which came with the sbc yahoo AT&T internet service. It scans the computer when coming back up from the shutdowns and syas that I am infected with win/sys32/g20.exe , but in order to remove the infection I have to buy a license from them! Pretty useless!

I think I will uninstal it and get another antivirus program which will not try to charge me to remove an infection. If the logs are clean then I believe the shuting down is a diferent issue. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate them.

    Thank you again.

    Hi camontoya,

Sorry there has been a delay. The suggestions we make are in How to Protect Yourself from Malware. There are good free tools which give the protection you need and don't use many resources. I think you'll find it a good read.

Right click My Computer / properties / advanced / startup and recovery / settings and uncheck automatic restart....when it crashes it will give you a BSOD that will have the information as to what the fault is...tell us that.

Thanks TimW and Abri. Computer is doing much better hasn't crashed again. I cleaned all the fans and also the inside of the computer. Everything seems to be working fine. I just get an error message when trying to remove programs saying: "Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." And the programs can't be removed. I noticed this when I removed viewpoint and google earth. I was able to remove viewpoint but not google earth and anything else since then.

Thanks for all you help and support.

Have you tried using CCleaner to remove programs?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

1 If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)

    * Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    * "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
o Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
o This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    * Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
2 *If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
3 *If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    6. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
