Computer infected

    Hi,

My wife's laptop recently began exhibiting malware behavior (some blue screens of death), and eventually ended up with a malware anti-spyware changing the desktop.

I ran a number of scans and ended up getting rid of most of the infections, but something remained: a win32/cryptor virus. AVG kept crashing during scan (blue screen) and Malwarebytes was unable to remove it. So I reviewed your procedures here and that is where I'm at, asking for help.

After following your procedures here I obtained logs -- please note that there is no log from Combofix as either the computer stalled after it identified the following items:

    c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\geyekrcbtqlasf.sys
    \system32\geyekrmrstaodl.dll
    \system32\geyekrawasjnqh.dat
    \system32\geyekrjnroeqdr.dll
    \system32\geyekrsqexilxq.dat

and (presumably) removed them upon reboot (or else I inadvertently stalled it after reboot). Rather than run it again, I continued with the procedures.

I have attached the three logs for your review, and am waiting to hear back regarding the next steps. Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I still need the log from running the C:\MGTools.exe --> C:\MGLogs.zip.

Sorry about that. Included it here.

I am not seeing any malware. And I also did not see the C:\Combo.txt in your logs. So I will ask you to run it again and make sure that you not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

You at one point had Symnatec installed. We can remove those leftovers now:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate

Now please attach the Combo log and also run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator) and attach the new C:\MGLogs.zip

    Here's the data (see attached).

    The Regedit fixMe worked successfully.

Let me know if everything looks clean, or if there is anything else lingering.

    Thanks.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks for all your help.

The system appears to be clean and I've tweaked a few of the internal settings.

I have one last question: Under Add/Remove Programs it shows:
America Online (Choose which version to remove)

Yet when I attempt to change/remove it does a scan and says that no versions are installed. Presumably some files/folders were deleted without uninstalling. Is there a way that I can correct this?

    Thanks again!

Post in the software forum for this issue. However, you should be able to use CCleaner to remove those items.

    Safe surfing. :)
