    Welcome to MajorGeeks.
What brand and model is your computer?
When you say I ran a recovery, what did you do?
examples: a) pressed certain keys on the keyboard b) from inside windows, went into accessories, then system tools then tried a restore c) put in the XP disk and did a recovery from there or d) something not mentioned.

You press F11 at startup to access the recovery partition on an eMachine w3650. Did you do this?

Basically that is saying the operating system is gone.

You should not be putting in an operating system disk. It's my understanding that this model came with a hidden partition that restores the computer to the factory condition.
Did you get an operating system disk with your computer?

    Hi plodr,
yes I pressed f11 it then goes to pc recovery system and tells me to insert
    the disc.
The disc label says it's to re-install operating system. It also says "close all
programs-restart and follow on screen instuctions" but,I can't get the computer to do anything but go to recovery.
I copied and burned to a cd-NTOSKRNL-but can't figure out how to load it.
I also have Fix-It Utilities9 , but it's no help it says no files to restore.

    thanks again.........GRANPAW

    This is for the ntoskrnl
    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm
BUT you need a windows CD not a recovery cd, as you have, to follow the procedure
    expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
Note too that d might not be the correct letter because your cd/dvd might be given the letter e or f if the hidden partition uses the letter d.
