You need to disable system restore on the correct drive. Your OS is on drive C but the problem files you are trying to fix are on drive D. You must disable system restore for drive D. Or you should be able to do the same by just disabling it for all drives.

I thought I disabled BOTH drives when I checked the box "Turn Off System Restore on All Drives" but just to be thorough I first disabled it on D:\ via the settings button, rebooted and then disabled it on both drives, rebooted and finally made sure that the ONLY restore point available was today's at 11:05pm (present time) that should do the trick, hopefully... I'll post the results in a while

Thanx for all the info on antivirus, backup and specially firewalls, those are great links... really appreciate all your and BJGarrick's help...

If system restore is disabled you should have no restore points. If you are seeing restore points it means it is enabled. You cannot delete files in system restore if it is enabled.

Sorry I meant to say that I could only see one restore point (today's / present time) AFTER rebooting and reenabling restore points only on C:\...

Disabling restore points on both drives didnt work before, now disabling only D:\ didn't work either...
To fix the problem how can I manually erase the files if access is denied?

Please disable System Restore for ALL drives and leave it disabled. Then reboot.

After reboot download and install the below tool which is better at locating and deleting files than Windows Explorer:

    ExplorerXP

Run ExplorerXP and locate the problem file at:

    D:\System Volume Information\_restore {FE46C2C7-0179-4365-8BCC-C7CFDCF2AAB3}\RP139\A0079802.exe

Then on the top menu click Edit and then select Delete Permanently

Let me know if this works. If not, try it again in Safe Mode.

DO NOT enable any system restore until the file is deleted.

Chaslang, running ExplorerXP worked perfectly! Located and deleted the problem file: it was that easy... who would've known? Thanx!

I understand that many files could still be hanging around after disabling system restore points and rebooting... should I delete ALL the system restore files? They're filled with many many program files (like Kazaa) I had uninstalled YEARS ago and it takes up 3.41 GB of memory!

Yes! You should be able to delete all the old restore points to free up hard disk space (not memory ;) ). Then reboot, enable system restore to start creating new restore points.

Yeah sorry, thats what I meant... now who can I blame this mistake on  ?

    BTW, this ExplorerXP program rules!

Last quick question, inside the System Information Volume on the C:\ drive, there's a folder named < catalog.wci >, googled it and it looks sort of important, I can still delete, and a new one would be created upon enabling restore points right? I know it may be a retarted question, but I really dont want to make a huge mistake, with system restore points being disabled right now...

OK I'll look it up in the software forum, thanx for the info

I'll run the Bitdefender scan now, and if all goes well I'll enable the system restore...
I guess after that, I'll pretty much be done (for now, though I'm sure I'll be back)

 Thank you guys so much! Very helpful forums, definitely the best!

Sorry, still have an unanswered question from a couple of days ago:

When I uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2006 I used their removal tool (installation CD) however it definitely DID NOT remove all of the symantec and liveupdate files in my PC

    Using ExplorerXP I've found NIS2006 remanents in <Program Files\Common Files> and <Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data>

Should there still be MORE files lying around somewhere (eg - Registry)???

I assume you have now delete these since you do not need them.

Should there???? No there should not but there probably are. Very few programs do a complete job of cleaning up after themselves so if you search the registry you will more than likely find things with Symantec and/or Norton in them. This is another topic not really suited for the malware forum. But you can remove these from the registry using regedit or by using a good registry cleaning tool. But always make backups before playing in the registry and be careful when and if you do. There are loads of registry related tools here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads15.html

One of my favorites for searching and editing is Registrar Lite
