When I try to boot up my computer I get a message "Windows has found the following new hardware". After automatic search it finds nothing. This continues when I click on cancel. I can reboot in safe mode by holding down the shift key. I do not get that message when I start up in safe mode. I obviously can't access the internet in safe mode. I am trying to figure out the problem.
I am using Windows ME. confused

    Boot to safe Mode
Go to Device Manager that is
    Start>settings>controlpanel>system>hardware >devicemanager

In the box tha topens you will see alist of the computer hardware.
Have any of the devices got triangles or exclaimaton marks against them?
This will indicate any device which is not working properly.
Expand the tree by clicking on the cross in the square on the left.
    This will narrow it down
Right click on the device and reinstall the driver.

I did as you said in safe mode and opened up the 2 areas under Computer (Network adapters and system devices). I saw no triangles or exclamation marks when I opened up the plus signs. Do I still reinstall drivers or is that only if they had triangles or exclamation marks?
    Thanks!

The most likely option was that the driver for a particular component you already have has become corrupted hence the last suggestions.

Working in Device manager as before just check that all the devices: modem, display, hard drive audio etc are listed and one is not missing.
If this is the case clos ethe control panel
    start>run typein
    sfc click ok
select the option scan for altered files and click ok
If system file checker wants to restore any files insert the Me CD andclick ok
Click yes to back up existing.
you will need to repeat the proceedure for each defective file found.

Finally try the Millennium system restore. This is not as good as XP version but I have seen it work

    start>programs>accessories>system tools>system information>system restore

    follow the obvious instructions
