    hi,
My laptop (hp pavilion zd7680, 180 g hd, 512 ram, win xp media center) has
acquired a Trojan/virus after I downloaded a file from YouTube. It takes at least 30 minutes or more for my computer to come up. Once up, it doesn't matter what file that I try to open, it immediately starts opening up window after window of internet explorer. I cannot open in safe mode, I cannot go back to restore, I cannot do the malware removal steps listed here. I can try to type in the run field and the computer immediately fills in 'zxcv' and starts looping with internet explorer. The only way that I can get it to stop is to do a manual shut-down. I have tried to re-format from the disks that came with the computer and the computer locks up or starts looping again. At one point yesterday, I did get 'my computer' to open up. C: drive is showing 'spoolerlog' and that is the only file that shows up. The file cannot be deleted. When you try to highlight any file or action, the computer either locks up or goes into the looping procedure. I would appreciate any help that you can give me. Thanks, Diane

    Hi Diane!
I don't know if this will work, but see if you can get this to run:

I'm going to post two sets of instructions below. Each will be enclosed in separate Quote boxes. Make sure to complete the first one 100% before moving on to the second one.

ATTACH THE FIRST LOG NOW BEFORE CONTINUING OR YOU WILL OVERWRITE IT!!!! And then immediately continue on to the below steps.

    How are things working now?

I really do appreciate your help. However, The only way that I could get the Smitfraud file to my laptop was to copy it onto a disk from my desk computer and drag it onto the laptop. None of my normal functions seem to work at this time. I have a little bit of mouse movement, but that is not guaranteed to work the way that I want it to or need it to. I do not have control of the computer. I cannot type anything, I can not get into safe mode. At this time, I do not have internet access from the laptop computer, nor do I have printer access. I do not have ctrl-alt-delete either. Although I did get the file to open, I could not get the number to type. When I try to type, the computer starts putting strings of letters across the screen. I also have no way of getting the file to you for you to review once I am able to get that far. I was told that this is probably not a Trojan, but a replicating worm that has something to do with the spooler log that has shown up. Thanks again for trying to help me. Diane
