Computer keeps reproducing more and more copies!

I routinely save copies of images on my desktop; however, now there is a big (and getting bigger!) problem with them. They keep reproducing, even as I am trying to delete them. I have copies of copies, copies of shortcuts, copy of copy of, etc., up to 26 copies of each image. How can I get rid of these? Delete doesn't work. Everytime I try to delete, more and more keep popping up on the screen. I am guessing this is some sort of malware. How can I get rid of it?! If it is not malware, what is wrong with my computer? Please advise. I feel like someone or something is gaslighting me to make me lose my mind. It is working!
