I just finished installing xp tried 2 different copies( 2 different times.)
I can log on after it finishes the setup but when I try to install my router software it restarts.
I thought it was my external HDD but I've unplugged it and it does the same.
I hear a tock sound every time it restarts any Ideas might it be the MB or HDD?

    Same PC?

You should first install your chipset, video and ethernet/wireless/NIC drivers.

Usually, connection to or through a router requires no software to be installed, only a few changes to your network adapter's settings.

Yes same one, I usually have to only install my router software so I can connect to the internet, and I usually install my programs later,

but I remember on the first installation that worked when it restarted it said windows encountered a serious error, I got the my router to connect to the modem but the computer kept restarting.

What is the make/model of the router?

Linksys 2.4ghz Wireless -G Mod# WUSB54G, I have a feeling something else is wrong and not the router, I mean why would that make the computer restart constantly?

I looked I didn't run it, it opened by itself. every time I've installed this router I've never had to go through that for some reason my computer doesn't recognize the wireless router until it has the software installed, I haven't put the CD in and it hasn't shut off yet.

That's pretty much standard for anything connected via USB that requires drivers - load the drivers, connect the USB cable, driver install finishes, device is loaded and usable.

Thanks I'll check it out but I'm determined that the software cd is conflicting with my computer I see in the error reports but I can't figure why I've used this adapter and software for years now and never had a problem.
Maybe scratches on the CD corrupted the files?

Yeh it will be the CD, you can try making a copy of the disc and using that, sometimes that can help.

But if you can get it up and running with the downloaded driver [which may be a newer version] then all is good :)
