My computer is the only one in the house hard wired to the router. After we had to buy a new router, I started having trouble. The biggest problem is that my internet connection keeps getting dropped and it is impossible to stay connected to attach pictures, watch videos, or listen to music. As time has gone on my start up time has increased, but this could be because I have trouble downloading updates. I have run the malware removal programs, but I can only find 2 of the logs. Help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I need the logs from Hitman Pro and Malwarebytes. Per your other logs in MGlogs.zip, it seems you did not run the scans and save the logs per the instructions. Please run these scans and attach the logs. Follow the instructions given for running them in Step 2 of the below link

    Windows XP Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure

Your problems may not be due to malware. It may just be due to the below
    Code:
    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 121.77 MB
which shows that you do not have enough memory to properly run Windows XP SP3 and everything else you are running. You need 6 times this which is 3 GB or at a minimum at least 2 GB

Okay, I figured out what happened to the other logs. Maybe they will post this time.
I got Hitman Pro to load, but I can't get the Malwarebytes log. How to I get it out of the folder? Sorry if this sounds dumb. I'm done lots og attachments of other types, but this one has me going in circles.

If you run the scan, the log will be in the below folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Howard\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02) -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
    Viewpoint Media Player

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Services
    gupdate
    gupdatem
    Viewpoint Manager Service
    :Files
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\AskToolbar
    C:\Documents and Settings\Howard\Local Settings\Temp\*.*

    :Reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "MSMSGS"=-
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4285210250-2455654464-2347772394-1007\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run]
    "MSMSGS"=-
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now! WHile the above may help a little, your major problem is insufficient memory.

Ran Disable/Remove Windows Messenger and MGtools although I was never offered the 'Do a system scan only' option. Did not find any Viewpoint files. Downloaded OTM twice and opened the program. Copied and pasted the lines from the codebox, but both times when I clicked on Moveit the computer ran and ran and would not let me close or interupt the program. I had to unplug the computer. I am getting depressed. :cry

I did not ask you to run MGtools! I asked you to run analyse.exe which is a file in the C:\MGtools folder. You need to do this.

You need to make sure protection software is disable first and if that does not help, try booting in safe mode to run those steps with OTM only. For the rest, please run in normal boot mode.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm too ignorant to do this stuff. I spent a long time looking for how to access the analyse.exe part of the MGtools folder and finally ran it again which, of course, didn't help.

I'll be sure the protection software is off when I try OTM again.

Delete the MGtools.exe file so that you do not get confused by its presence. You do not need it anymore. Every thing we need now is in the C:\MGtools folder which was first created when you ran the MGtools.exe file you downloaded.

The analyse.exe file can be run in many ways, here is one.

    • Hold down the Windows Logo key and press the 'e' key at the same time. This will open up Window Explorer.
    • Into the address bar or Windows Explorer just type or copy and paste in C:\MGtools
    • This will open up the C:\Mgtools folder in Windows Explorer showing you all of the files and subfolders inside the C:\MGtools folder. Just scroll down until you see analyse.exe ( if you only see analyse and not the .exe at the end then you probably having viewing of file extension disabled ).
    • Just double click on analyse.exe to run it.

I found analyse.exe after dropping the MGtools off the front in my search. I found all of the lines but this one:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    Clicked fix and exited.
I then turned off Avast security and tried OMT again. Same thing only worse. Everything locked up and I eventually had to unplug the computer after waiting a long time. When I restarted the computer, it was slower than ever and once the screen went dark for a few seconds. I've never had that happen unless the screen saver was about to come on.
I guess I'll try again tomorrow. :confused

Please try running OTM in safe boot mode.

How do I do that? I know this sounds dumb, but I'm am (obviously) not very knowledgeable about working around in a computer. I used to know some of the tricks back when you has to go into DOS to change things and I have forgotten that.

    Got it! :)
It took me a bit to figure out how to navigate, but I got there. I hope the downloads are right. I'll let you know about the performance.

We are finished with cleanup now. Any remaining issues with performance are due to insufficient memory as stated earlier.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  16. HHD

    HHD Private E-2

Couldn't locate Defogger, but I'm not sure I need it. How can I tell?
Ran the MGclean.bat file and all went well.
Did the disable and enable for system restore.
Haven't got to the How to Protect Yourself from Malware yet.

My computer had some issues that have been cured, but none of this helped my problem with losing my internet connection. The other computers in the house that are getting their signals wireless still work fine. I am losing my connection when I change pages and can't run video or attach files to emails. Can you help me diagnose this problem?
Also, what are thanks as applied to this forum? I certainly thank you for your patient help, but I wondered if there was more to it.

You did not download it during the READ & RUN ME so you do not have anything to undo now.;)

You can post about this in the Software Forum. But you can also try the below just for the heck of it.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

The little thumbs up Thanks icon can be click in any post to that the person who posted the message.
