Computer Locks Up

My computer has a pentium 4, 1.7 processor with factory cooling. The problem im having is that the computer locks up at various times without any notice. I've put in a new power supply, new video card, ran various registery cleaners, defragged hard drive, done everything I know to do. I would greatly appreciate any HELP from fellow members. Im at the end of my rope with this nice computer I built 2 years ago.

 

well, if you're thinking that it might be heat related, then I would check to make sure all fans are working. Maybe even leave the side of the case off and see how it runs like that.

 

Just a shot but make sure that everything is seated correctly, and the case is not BENT in any way (as that can hold components out of line with the mainboard, for example graphics card)

I had a very simelar problem about 6 months ago, it was driving me crazy and it turned out that the case was bent and wasnt holding the graphics card in the slot correctly!

 

Does it happen in Safe Mode?

 

I'm having a similar problem but it seemd that mine occurs whenever I trans fer data. If I try to transfer files internally from HD to HD, it locks up. If I try to burn something to CD or DVD, it locks up. If I have a particularly long internet download or DVD install, it locks up. I originally thought it might be my controller but had everything checked and it all checked fine (MB, HDs, memory, etc.) In talking with a few techs thye said they had seen a bad power supply cause this problem so I put in a new power supply and went from 500W to 650W. Still the same problem. Also, if I try to do a complete virus scan of my drive, it will ock up before it finishes. I have tried this with 2 different virus programs.

Does any one have any additional ideas I acn try?
