I'm guessing it's overheating but could be something else. Any ideas?

This will enable you to see what the temperatures are,- minimise the box small enough to show temperatures, and you should tell if it is a temperature problem

If it restarts only when downloading, and never restarts ANY other time, it's probably not a temp issue. It's probably a faulty NIC or corrupt software/drivers.

It restarted when I tried to install a few things too. Also, IE crashes when trying to open a few pages.

-baklogic, I can't download anything otherwise I would've had an anti-virus and decent firewall on there by now :p

It just came back from a repair shop so would we be able to claim that it was their fault?

I would first see if the repair shop will accept responsibility.
No antivirus, and no firewall ?With all the freeware about, I do not think much of a repair shop that will not at least put one on for you, when reparing.
I assume you cannot use system restore ?
If not, if you are running XP, you can try to fix Windows, by using the - sfc /scannow- from the run box.Insert your Xp disc, and when retry comes up , just keep clicking retry. It can take a while, but will fix most corrupted Windows files.

It's a new hard drive in there too so I'm not sure where the corrupted files would come from :S

I doubt a system restore would work as there's only the days where we've got it back on there.

I think a GFX card problem might also be a reason too. The fan is running pretty loudly and when scrolling down a window it goes in chunks rather than smoothly.

Windows can get corrupted files just looking at the web !
If you run a registry checker at any time, and I mean practically anytime, it will find errors.
Any install, or, download, can give Windows a headache, as we all know, it's brilliant, but not infallable.
The Graphics driver sounds iffy, if you have not udated the driver, it could well help - if you have updated, try rolling back to previous driver. Also, if you have the windows driver installed, and then installed the Grahics card's own drivers, it can cause problems, if you did not uninstall the Windows driver before installing the Graphics card driver.
Are all you motherboard drivers up to date?

I doubt it. If I update thosse, would it help to fix the problem?

Updated drivers are always worth looking at, especially Graphics Crd Drivers.
Re-reading this thread, leads me to consider the memory.
I usually set Windows to one and a half times my installed ram.- if Windows runs low on its own memory, it can make life difficult. Start, right cick mycomputer, properties, advanced, performance, settings, advanced, virtual memory - change to max to one and a half times the installed ram.
The Explorer cache could be too full, it is worth going to explorer options, and deleting cookies ,history, andsaved pages, so that Explorer has room to load the new pages- it takes a little longer first time back on the Web, but then it should help it to run better.

Another memory jog, I remember plugins in explorer being a pain , some months ago, and it can be worth going into tools, in explorer, and disabling any plugins, they can be enabled again, if it does not help.Acrobat reader plug in was one that did give me a problem, then, and explorer took ages to change a window, cpu was running at 100%,.

Go through the initial cleanup stages in the malware forum then post the Hijack This log there.

It sounds like it worked fine, you took it to a computer store to get a new hdd put in, they did the os/drivers installation and now it dosen't work. were u having these problems before taking it in?

They may have just installed a wrong driver somewere or damaged something whilst changing the hdd.

If it worked and they broke it they should Diagnose/fix it free of charge.

If you want to fix it yourself be prepared to slog it out, diagnosing hardware/software is tricky enough in person let alone over a messageboard on another computer alltogether :)
