Hey guys, it seems everytime i ask you, i always get some great help, so i come back to ask why my computer is running so slow. I ran a Spyware scan with (Ad-Aware) I ran a virus scan by nortans, picked up nothing. I have 140 GB free space. I have no clue what is going on. My programs take a long time to load, freezes occasionally. I have Windows XP, 512 mb ram, i dont think it could be a memory problem.

So if any of you guys have ideas that would be excellent, thanks again guys!

    On your keyboard press CTRL+ALT+DELETE
    Click on the tab Processes
    Under Image Name
    Write down every name
Put a copy of that up here and I might be able to help.

wait whoa don't write down each and everyone, just move this topic to spyware specific you can get lots of help there then eventually post a HJT log I would suggest that.

Download and install Process Explorer. Better than msconfig, or Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

I count the processes as around 67 running. :p
Seems to be high. Usual number is around 45+ for XP.

BlackViper site may help. Lots of valuable info there.

    Hey Blade,

How long have you had Norton's installed? That could be some of your problem, you have at least 12 Symantec processes going. Here is one example of the processes running.

    CCSETMGR.EXE
This is one of MANY processes that are used by Norton Security (AV + Net Security) If its under the appropriate directory you'll have nothing to worry about. If you're experiencing slowdowns you'll want to upgrade your hard drive and/or your RAM. Norton is a resource hog.

Oops, i forgot to mention, i had nortans Optimizing in the background, its taking over a week, so i didnt want to exit it. I don't think nortans is the problem, i've had it for over a year, this just happened recently after i Re-formatted after getting affected by a serious virus.

    I'd recommend uninstalling NAV.
2 free AntiVirus programs as follows.
    AVG. www.majorgeeks.com/ download886.html
    Avast. www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html

I much prefer Avast, to AVG. I used to run AVG, but switched. Avast is unobtrusive, gets updates automatically, whenever they are available. Uses very little resources.

Somewhere on the BlackViper site it gives a list of most XP processes, and whether you need them running, or not. As I mentioned, 67 seems like a hell of a lot of processes. Bazza

I agree with Bazza. 67 is a bit much and NAV isn't helping any.

It looks like from the log, you have the whole Norton's product. So I don't see you doing away with it, but, the option that Bazza suggested would run better and do just as good a job I think.

A couple of ideas you might try.

    1. Download a program like Startup Inspector, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4075 and see if you can remove some of the programs from the startup list. You can cross-check these items at the BlackViper site like Bazza said. If you are going to keep Norton's don't remove ANY from the startup, you may have problems.

    2. Run a few of the spyware scans here, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 you might be surprised what they find. Be sure to try the Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware, http://majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_AntiSpyware_d4466.html

    3. I have Photoshop Elements but don't have it on startup, do you have to have Photoshop CS on startup and running?

Well im not going to uninstall NAV since i've had it for over 2 years and havent had this issue with NAV. Becuase im new to computers, i didn't know anything about processes. Ill give you a updated list soon with nothing running in the background. For now ill try everything out, spyware scans etc.

Thank you so much for all your help guys!

I had Norton for several years before I wised up and uninstalled it and Now have Trend Micro's PC-cillin on my main comp and AVG/Kerio on all the other comps I am associated with. Either works wonderful.

On a bad day, I have under 30 processes running on my comp. The first step is to trim that number down. It would be better to get a different anti-virus, but you should be able to trim at least 20 processes off that list.

Before you do that, however, you should go to this site, and follow all the steps in order. There are quite a few steps, but it is worth the time. You will be refered to Black Viper's site from there, but I strongly advise you to go through it in order.

    You'll be glad you did.

Going to have to work my way through this, very very slowly. Thanks Bazza.:D

Wow, it seems i have fixed my computer. I don't know how though, i deleted Explorer which was taking up Half of my Computer Usage. Then logged off, and had 5% instead of 100%. Thats great! Im going to use all the scans you guys gave me, you don't know how much you guys helped, thanks so much, i hope this is resolved for good!

Glad you had success. Was it Windows Explorer, or Internet Explorer, that you deleted? You're going to have to reload IE to get the latest M$ updates, though. Make sure that you load Process Explorer, as per an earlier post of mine. It will prove invaluable. Bazza
