Computer sloooowed down considerably!

I have a Dell PC that has slowed down considerably. I have run for spyware, emtpied temp and cache files, defragged... Still it is so dang slow! I just don't know what else to do. Can somebody help me PLEASE? I'm not even sure info you need, but I'll get whatever it is.

 

You have scanned for spyware, but have you run through the entirety of the malware removal thread?

This will make sure that your system is free from spyware, viruses, trojans, worms and the like. It will also establish a baseline upon which we can begin troubleshooting your problem, if you still have one after following those instructions.

 

How long have you had it? Have you installed a lot of software on it? A lot of installing and uninstalling software? What version of Windows? If Win XP, do you have SP2, the major udate, installed? Do you have problems with browser popups, even though you've done some spyware scanning?

How much free space, absolute and percentage, is on the hard drive? Do you what your setting is for the paging file, i.e. virtual memory?

Do you have the system CD's that came with the computer? Have you ever formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows?

May sound stupid but check that your cmos (or bios?) hasnt reset and halved your cpu speed.

Did that on my dads a couple of times, didnt slow it down dramatically but did slow it down.

Dropped it from 1800mhz to 1100

Then you had to correct the date and stuff!
