Computer time

About a year ago, I installed Avast in my daughter's computer. It now receives messages from Avast that it needs to be registered again. When I try to register it, I receive a message that the computer's time and date are wrong. I double clicked on the time in her systray and saw that it was set to time.windows.com. I changed it to time.nist.gov to see if it would make a difference, but it didn't so I changed it back to time.windows.com. It has the right date and time when I double clicked on the clock icon.

Is there another way to set the date and time besides going into BIOS/CMOS? I can get into BIOS/CMOS in my pc but I don't know how to get into it in hers.

Her computer is a Compaq Presario and runs Windows XP Home. I don't know too much more about it.

    Start>Run>Cmd>Time (type the word "Time")

This will then ask you you enter a new time

Replace the word time with Date for setting the date.

    :)

The time and date are accurate so I don't know why Avast is saying that it's not.

I set the date and time by the way you recommended,Yargwell, but it didn't help. For some reason, Avast is seeing something incorrectly. I wrote an email to Avast regarding this problem. I don't know if they'll respond but, as of this afternoon, the pc has no anti-virus program running. I'm going to look through MajorGeeks recommended programs and install it until/if I get the Avast issue resolved.

    Thanks for your help :)

I just found something strange. Right now, the clock on my daughter's says that it's 8:57:32 PM and the next time it will synchronize is at 8:46 PM. So somewhere, the clock and some other clock inside her computer is 11 minutes off.

I was able to get into CMOS by pressing the F1 key at start-up. CMOS has the date and time correctly set but the day is set as Wed. Today is Monday. The day is grayed out so that I can't make a change to it.

    Any ideas?

I wanted to post this so that if someone else has the same problem, they'll know what to do.

I wrote an email to Avast Tech Help last night and I received a reply this morning. They told me to uninstall Avast and to download and reinstall a new one because the old one might have become corrupted. I did this and Avast installed and works fine now.
