Computer want load to windows

A friend I work with has been having some troubles with her computer and has given it to me as she cannot afford to have tech take a look.

The problem is it will not boot up to windows, it keeps going to the black screen with the options of starting in safe mode etc.. I have tried starting in all of these modes with no luck. When starting it in safe mode it gets to this line,

Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

And then freezes. I also get a cmos checksum error-defaults loaded, error.

I have changed the battery and set bios to load default settings, reseated graphics card and memory sticks.

These are the system specs I can find.
Asus p4s333 ACPI Bios Revision 1006c
2000mhz
xp

Thanks for the reply that seems to be the exact problem. If I do a repair will I lose any info on the hard drive. The ladie I am doing it for has quite a lot of music on her machine and does'nt want to lose it.
