I can get to the bios set up and thats it. I have tried several boot disks including the one made for my computer and it dont work. shows the hard drive in bios setup. I got in windows once with safemode but nothing since then. This all started when my graphics cards built in fan quit working and got hot. My computer shut down. I removed the card and plugged into my on board video and now windows will not start up at all. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings, gamegodessss, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

What's the make and model # of your machine (please include any Service Tag #s), and what operating system version and Service Pack # are you using?

In BIOS, make sure that everything is set to safe defaults - pay particular attention to any graphics settings. If this is a desktop, you might even consider pulling the CMOS battery for a while to force a reset to default settings...

Also, inspect the motherboard closely - any obvious burn tracks, discolorations, bulging capacitors, etc.?

I have looked for burn marks, no burnt smell, nothing popped that I could see. I loaded default settings. Tried to remove the bios battery and it didnt want to pop out but default settings were restored. I know them inside and out. Plus i write everything down prior to making any kind of changes.

I have an emachine ET 1810-03r with windows 7 home premium 64 bit with service pack 1. 320 gig sata hard drive. ive tried all 4 ports and it doesnt make a difference. I can get it to the point repair windows or start windows normally and ive tried both options. On the repair option it loads windows drivers and goes to black screen. starting windows normally goes to the starting windows colored wavy thing and freezes there. It wont restart on ctrl, alt delete. I have to power down and back up again. I get one beep on startup before bios. Also when i get lucky enough to get into a fake drive using my boot disk, no options work cuz it asks me to choose an operating system and the box is empty (shows no operating system to repair or run any diagnostics. I can get to the command prompt after booting with boot disk but it only shows the X drive. No C drive is available. Not sure what you mean by service tags.

F8 options too, none work. I end up frozen or black screen

I have some new information. My room mate informed me today that he was trying to get my computer to start up the other night when i was asleep and he got into the boot dvd and ran a virus scan and the scan results said it found zlob.exe and pkrinstall.exe. He said the virus scan quarinteed them both. But I cant say where it put them.

At the X:\.. prompt type notepad and hit <enter>. Then in notepad click File and choose Save. Browse to Computer and find the letter of your large Win7 drive.

Close notepad and at the X:\.. prompt type chkdsk C: /r and hit <enter> (substitute the drive letter of your Win7 drive for C in the command). It will check the filesystem for errors. Try to restart normally and see if it hangs at the same spot. Stage 4 of chkdsk will take 20 minutes or so.

Does hitting F12 during the emachine screen give you a boot menu to select CDROM as the boot device?

  8. gamegodessss

    gamegodessss Private E-2

yes it does then it says booting from cd then it loads windows drivers then it says loading windows then it goes to a black screen with a mouse curser and the mouse curser moves freely but it doesnt move from the black screen and i have left it there for hours at a time and nothing.

CORRECTION: windows does not load drivers, it says windows is loading FILES. Sorry my bad....

I've seen WinRE hang without fully loading but never figured out the cause. It is usually just a matter of giving five full minutes to let it load and if it doesn't load then rebooting and trying again.

There is always tomorrow. I think it is worth running the chkdsk just to rule out a problem with the file system.

Just curious if you had you tried System Restore from the list of 5 options where you found the command prompt option when you had the CD loaded up? If not that might be another alternative to the chkdsk.

I let my computer sit for hours on end with the black screen. Mainly cuz it did not appear to be frozen. My caps lock light goes on and off, my mouse moves when i test it but after hours and I mean I literally walked away and went and watched a couple movies and no change. I have been working on this problem for well over a week now. I have tried f2, f8, f10 and f12 and every option within each key. Several times over. I tried system restore, restore disk made for my computer. i bought spotmau power suite gold 2012 and used their boot cd which on first use it booted me up, took me into the boot program which gives you an X drive and lots of different tools and utilities to try but ended up to be of no use cuz whenever i tried to use the toolls a box opened up and said, ""choose your operating system from the list,"" and the box would be empty. So NO C drive, no OS, No use for the tools lol. After that one time it wont boot up again. My bios detects the hard drive but nothing beyond that.

I am not computer stupid (no pun intended) but I am fresh out of ideas. This system is only just over 1 year old and all i use it for is yahoo messenger and i play on some card leagues in pogo and pretty much thats it. I have never had this much trouble except with virus issues and the guys at spyware hammer always got me through it but im locked out of getting to them. I get a 403 forbidden error when i try to access their site. I was thinking maybe a virus is doing this but if so, how do you find it if you cannot access the drive, not even in command prompt? uggg I am very frustrated to say the least lol sorry I had to vent lol

    Good morning...

You might consider burning a Linux distro and booting to that disk, try to salvage any data that you might wish to save. It looks to me that if sach2 can't get your file system checked, either this is heading towards (at the very least) a drive wipe and Windows reinstall or a drive replacement...

I'm not sure what is going on. Does shift + F10 at the screen with the moveable cursor bring up anything?

I agree with Caliban, I you use Linux distro. This can rule out hardware problems. Sounds like driver problems to me.

I removed my hard drive and hooked it up in my room mates computer. And it did the same thing. I think my hard drive is toast.... :(

How did you hook it up--as a secondary drive where you still booted to your roommate's HD--or by itself?

What did it do in your roommate's computer--what were you attempting to do?

If you hooked it up as a secondary drive where you still booted to your roommate's OS you could run the chkdsk from there.

I disconnected his and plugged mine in so it was the only hard disk hooked up. What is linux distro?? i know nothing about linux.

A linux distro in this context would be a version of linux in an ISO file format. You would download the file and then burn it to a blank CD/DVD as an "image"file. That would create a bootable CD from which to run Linux. Imburn has a "write image file to disc option" that will work fine to burn the ISO to CD if you wanted to try it.

The benefit would be that it would load to a "Windows" looking desktop and allow to browse your HD to find important personal files. You could then copy those files to a USB flash drive or external HD for safe keeping. All done without installing Linux it would just run directly from the CD. Puppy Linux is a small distro that is fairly easy to use. Version 5.2.8 a bit down the page is recommended. http://puppylinux.org/main/Download Latest Release.htm

I'm still curious why you can't boot to your boot disc. Yesterday, you could not get passed the black screen after "Windows is loading files". Now, today with no HD in the laptop if you try to boot to that disc in the laptop do you get to the X: prompt? If you do then try to repeat that a couple of times in a row (only give it 5 minutes a try--no long wait). I want to know if there is a difference between booting to the CD with and without the HD. If it doesn't boot to the CD with the HD installed but does boot to the CD without the HD installed that might tell us the HD is the problem.

I didnt use the laptop with my hard drive, My room mate Bob has a desktop computer and thats what I used, He is not home at this time. But my hard drive did the same thing on his as it did on mine which is nothing. I end up at a black screen with a white arrow for my mouse. I am not sure what you want me to do from here. i dont not have an klnowledge of how to burn an image onto a cd, Never done that before. and I know absolutely zilch about linux. I have to go to town so i will will check back here upon my return. Prolly early evening round about.

That tells us that the BIOS/motherboard has checked a few basic stats on the drive (ST3320813AS) and the result is that it's bad = probably dead, by the looks of things :(

I restarted again and tried booting from my rescue disk and I got a blue screen and this is what it said::

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time seeing this stop error screen restart computer. If it happens again follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check hard drive confifuration and check for any updated drivers. Run chkdsk /F to check hard drive for corruptions and restart.

    Here is the tech info:

    *** Stop : 0x00000024 (0x001904FB, 0x8c76A660, 0x8c76A240, 0x8860c8A3)
    *** NTFS.SYS address 8860c8A3 base at 88601000, datestamp 4a5bbf45

    So what does this mean?

I didnt restart yet. Still sitting here looking at blue screen.

That error can sometimes be fixed by a chkdsk that is why I wanted you to run that. The fact that you have a bad SMART status on your HD says the hard drive has too many errors on it and is likely to soon fail. Even if you get to the point of running a chkdsk and it can get you into Windows, further random corruption is likely to occur as the drive is failing. The HD really has to be replaced.

I have a question. When I get a new hard drive, what are my options for putting an OS on it since my computer did not come with a disk with it on it?

Also I want to thank you all for all your effort and time spent helping me. It is very comforting to know you are here to help those in need. Your all a very rare breed. Theres not that many good people left in the world. Thank you very much :)

I need to know the make and the model number, If the computer might have restore disks available. If they are available. I'll give you the link.

Before you go out, and buy another hard drive. Give a tool a chance to repair the drive. Follow this link and burn the ISO. This disk is called the Ultimate Boot CD.
After you burn the CD,Boot the computer with the bad drive.
On the menu you will find Hard Disk Tools Click on that.
Next you will find Sea tools. Do the Diagnostics and Repair.

If this doesn't work It's time to get a new drive.

Hi onegoodman, I already did that. I actually bought the whole suite, Spotmau Powersuite Gold 2012. Made the boot disk and used it over and over again. Problem with that is not once did it ever show my hard drive. When it asks you to pick your OS from the list in the box, the box was always empty.

I took a quick look at spotmau and it looked like a win7 repair disc with some extra features.

When it has the box to select OS and you have none showing is there a choice of a Drivers and Next button? If you do have that choice and select Next do you get a list of 5 options including command prompt?

The Ultimate Boot CD doesn't run under Windows at all. The disk runs under Linux, and it uses free-dos for the tools. I have repaired quite a few computers with the tools. I have one drive that was 40 MB and after the repair I had only 10 MB of usable space. Well that hard drive ended up getting recycled.
