Computer won't connect/run system progs

Don't really know what the issue is. When I left on Vacation everything worked fine. Shut down my machine. Came back and it won't connect to internet, shut down gracefully (gotta kill the power), won't run system type programs etc. Can see my wife's machine on our home network can print. Computer browser service stuck in "Stopping". Same problem on another HD I pulled from the machine about two months ago. After posting on Microsoft fourm ran "repair" install on OS, now it wants to initialize XP before going on to desktop. As I can't connect, it goes nowhere. Can't get into safe mode

Have run spyware dr and norton anti virus from cd.

Running XP home SP2, 25k mem 1.4 Athlon CPU, two month old 120gig maxtor HD.

At this point, Im not sure if it's software, hardware or just my plain dumb luck...
