computer won't connect to remote sites

I think the 'not connecting to remote sites' problem is the common thread between all that is happening to my computer.

I have WinXP, and I've noticed that some of my programs can't automatically update themselves, like my Adobe Flash Player tries to update once a week and it always fails. When I try to update Malwarebytes from its control window, it won't connect to the website. I just tried to open Google Earth yesterday and it also can't connect to the remote server to pull up my files. I used to have uTorrent, but it never worked from day one because the ports were always closed and I couldn't download anything.

I tried turning off the Windows and Norton firewalls and trying to connect via Google Earth, but the result is the same. I've checked the 'allow' list and every one of those programs are allowed to connect to the internet through the firewalls. Could someone tell me how to fix this? It's getting really annoying to find yet another program that can't update! Thanks,
    -Lisa

You should never run two software firewalls. When you say you tried, did you turn them off? I suspect not since you can't seem to get out onto the internet.
What SP on XP are you running?
What version of Norton (give the full title of the program because there are so many) are you running?
What browser, as well as version are you running?

Yes I was able to turn off both firewalls just fine...both of them are on now but I can go ahead and turn one of them off. Which one would be better to turn off?

I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 3
Norton Security Center 2005 (Old and out of date since I can't afford to upgrade. I'm using Malwarebytes to fill the gap)
Firefox 3.6.12 (I can't pull anything up in IE anymore, which is kinda moot since I hate IE, It's probably very out of date by now)

    Thanks!

Keep Windows firewall; we can find something better later.
Read through this and grab the download items I linked to before you go through the steps.

    1. First use add/remove to clean Norton Internet Security Center off your pc.
    2. Reboot.
    3. Run this removal tool http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html to remove any remaining bits of the 2005 product.
    4. Reboot again.
    5. Get yourself an up to date av; I can recommend AntiVir http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_FREE_Antivirus_d955.html
I have it on 5 XP computers currently in the house (not all mine) and two computers running windows 2000.
Install your av program and update it.
    6. Open IE and click on File. Be sure that Work Offline does not have a check/tick in front of it; if it does, click it to remove it.
    7. Click on Help in IE and then About Internet Explorer and see what version you are currently running. Post it here. (It would either be some version of 6, 7 or 8).
