Computer won't even start, I think it's a mixture of viruses and adware

I've had a problem before which was cleverly got rid of by chaslang, and I followed the steps to protect myself from malware, but I think I still somehow got a virus and spyware.

In an attachment I scanned it with NIS 2005 Antispyware Edition, but when I opened an application(from the attachment) a dialog box came up saying my computer had just been infected by a virus AND adware-Adware.SpySheriff, even though the definitions for everything had only just been updated in the morning.

Now my main PC won't log on anymore-you try to log on, and the background loads up, but nothing else happens. I did Ctrl-Alt-Delete and taskmanager said the only process running for my user was the taskmanager.

I can't even follow the Symantec's advice to remove the adware or the READ & RUN ME FIRST guide(obviously because I can't log on even in safe mode) and I can't get a HiJack This log so you guys can look at it.

Could someone suggest what I could do? Help would be VERY gratefully appreciated.

What exactly did you download and where did you download it from I guess NIS is not too good and perhaps you should complain to them. SpySheriff has been around for a long time and they even know about it. Why wouldn't they detect it?

But on the otherhand, SpySheriff has never made a PC not bootable. At least not in the 1000 or so cases I have seen. Are you sure you did not pick up something else?

If you can get to Task Manager, click File, New Task (Run...) and enter cmd and click OK. If this works a command prompt windows should come up. From this command prompt window you can try using the below procedure to Restore your PC to a data before the infection occurred.

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP

I'm not sure, and I never liked Norton anyway.

I'm going to try Dell PC Restore because I'm sick of it all and PC Restore returns the PC to factory conditions(deletes added files including viruses :).

    Thanks anyway for your help.
