    Hello Major Geeks,

I had problems with my internet connection a week ago, and since my Avira license expired I decided to get the free edition and scanned my drives. 500+ virus were detected and I deleted all of them but Avira keeps detecting this Worm Conficker Z. And it keeps coming back. I did all of the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure and here are the logs.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Whoever has been using this needs to develop better surfing habits and also needs to keep it properly updated. Windows and other applications are out of date with updates which is a severe security risk.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedirect?o=13836&gct=&gc=1&q=
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://toolbar.ask.com/toolbarv/askRedirect?o=13836&gct=&gc=1&q=%s
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the quick response chaslang.

I did all of what you told me to do except updating windows because it takes a long time to download but I'll get to that. Anyways, here are the logs you requested. I'll post again if everything works better or if no more problems are found.

    My thanks to you again.

Okay, now I don't know what's wrong. I get timed out results on Firefox in just 2 hours after my last post. Is it still malware? I have to reboot so that I can surf again. Thanks again for all the help.

We have a couple more things to fix and I'm also going to have you uninstall FireFox and then reinstall the current version since you are out of date.

Now we need to use ComboFix

Now are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:
    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

You will need exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.
    • Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.
    • After reboot, delete the below folders:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\documents and settings\UserAccount\Application Data\Mozilla
where UserAccount is the actual user account name being used.
    • Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
    • Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

I can't run combofix because it says that Antivir desktop is working even though I disabled it from msconfig in the startup. I can't risk machine damage. What do I do?

Try running it anyway. Just disregard what ComboFix is saying as long as you have shutdown all of Avira. If it will not run then try running just the ComboFix part in safe boot mode.

Okay, I did all of your instructions. The logs are attached. Thanks again chaslang.

I had a problem once again. I got applications error when I opened firefox and even task manager so I decided to shut down. An MCI command handling window was needed to be exited before the pc shuts down and when I ended the program the pc did not shut down. I tried opening the task manager and even msconfig but it said dll error or something. Anyways, this all happened after my brother used the pc when I went to sleep. Can the said problem be prevented or fixed?

    Thank you.

You need to stop doing anything with this PC except what we ask you to do until we can remove your malware. This was stated at the beginning of the READ & RUN ME.

I also suggest that you do not shutdown or reboot this PC anymore unless we ask you to do so. Or unless one of the tools we run forces a reboot. Your infection is spreading when you run other programs and when you reboot. DO NOT do any unnecessary surfing!!!!! Don't run things like Limewire, BitTorrent or other torrent downloaders (these are likely the cause of your infection to begin with).

Your conficker infection has mutate a little to include a different service and even the next fix I post below may be incorrect. The reason I say it may be incorrect is if after posting your last logs you have rebooted, powered down, or have run other programs or have done any additional surfing, the names of the infected services and files may have already changed which would make the fix ineffective.

Now we need to use ComboFix again

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Remember DO NOT reboot or power down your PC after attaching your logs!

I'm sorry if I am becoming a nuisance and I appreciate all of what you are doing for me. No rebooting and powering down will be followed. Here are the logs. Thanks again.

You're welcome. Looks like we got it all this time. Now you need to reneable your antivirus and you need to get a real firewall installed since the Windows firewall is very inadequate. This is covered in the below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you very much in helping me with this ordeal. I am downloading Comodo firewall.
