Configuring my router for me to be able to play online

Hi there, I'm new to this forum and am experiencing a couple of problems with playing a game online (worms 2 demo). The problem is that noone can join me when I am hosting a game there. and when I join someone, I can talk to them in the lobby they are hosting. But when we are starting the game and connecting, we cant connect. I have tried to setup the port used by the game (17171) so that this wouldn't be a problem, but it seems to still be.

In another game, that works basically in the same way, I set up my ports first in my router(dsl?) configuration menu, and when that disn't worked out, I found a little guide how to do this in telnet, and after creating some entries there, I was able to host and join in that game.

Now, one thing I am also wondering about is, when I enter my ip adress in the url bar, I get to the setup thingy for the router presumably. But my router is a 3com router, and if I'm not mistaken my dsl is made by speedtouch. And the title of the router setup thing, has a speedtouch name, not a 3com. So am I at all accessing my router there? or am I setting up something in my dsl? I know this sounds n00bish (and for all I know is n00bish) but I'm no guru when it comes to router and dsl...

Id you need more information/any screenshots, just ask and I will try to provide them for you. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

    Peace out

I thought this was a common problem. Figured I would get at least one reply (apart from the bump I'm doing now...)

Is the windows firewall enabled? You never even stated your OS.

I am using windows 2000, obviously the router firewall is enabled. Don't think there is a windows firewall in 2000 (correct me if I'm wrong :) ). I got Norton antivirus for this machine, but for some reason it is withouth a firewall.

I LOVE Worms 2 ! Although I'm not sure about your problem... it may be that the Demo does not support online or MP games. You could try disconneting the Modem (to be safe) and attempting to put the router in DMZ mode (not recommended, thats why I said to isolate it from the Modem).

the demo supports MP :) I have played it for like 6 years so I should know. but how do you put your router in DMZ mode? what does it do? and what could happend (since I should disconnect my modem)? Anyway when I open ports in the router settings, what adress should I use (as the gateway or whatever the name is)? Should it be the gateway adress to your pc? your local ip adress (router)? or the i.p. adress? because I haven't got it working with my ip adress...

You access your router thur its IP. DMZ opens all ports which pretty much disables it as a firewall. Check the makers site for info on how to access it and the "how too's"...

Oh.. are you trying to play with another PC on your LAN or with someone via the internet? If its on your LAN you should need to worry about the Router. Internet... you may not be able to if your hosting the game (ISP restrictions). There may be ways around it but I can never get my system to be seen as a server when I attempt to host a game (DMZ or port forwarding).

It is on internet. For some reason I managed through some hefty port forwarding and telnet "programming" I managed to be able to host on another game. Does that mean it should be possible to do that in other games too?

About the DMZ thingy. I heard that it is very risky to disable the firwall (which disabling the DMZ will do according to you) since then hackers can easily find their way into my computer since all the ports are open.
