Confirm that my system is clean PLEASE??

Hi everyone! I am so thankful that I found MajorGeeks. My son's computer had serious spyware, virus, you-name-it issues! I read all of the READ THIS FIRST instructions, carefully went through the malware removal steps (with the exception of PandaActiveScan - couldn't get the scanner to load, tried twice) and saved all the logs.

At first, StartPage trojan was the biggest nasty I had to get rid of. I upgraded to IE7 once I was sure I had the trojan zapped. IE now works, thank goodness. Instead of trying to fix the problem, he simply started using Mozilla Firefox. Problem 1 solved.

He had AVG, and it wasn't doing the job. Installed Norton, cleaned up some nasty little bugs. Problem 2 solved.

I think I'm just about finished with the cleanup, but I noticed an O21 (if I remember correctly) item in the HJT log that starts with "incestuously" - that, of course, threw up a red flag so I did a quick search online which makes me think it's another nasty leftover but didn't want to be an idiot and just remove stuff willy-nilly. Also, in either the getrunkey or shownew log, I noticed a folder being used by Trojan.FakeAlert.cx (SmitFraud) - I've seen this referenced by SpyBot and Norton blockers. I've also done the simplified instructions for removing about:blank as my home page keeps getting changed back to a blank page. Still coming up with blank home page....

Followed the installation and renaming (to analyse) instructions for HJT.

I am attaching all of the logs I have and would greatly appreciate instructions to finish the cleanup. Oh, just remembered. I did disable system restore before beginning all of the cleanup attempts and enabled it again once I finished. I'm trying to remember all of the details you'll need!

Will attach HJT log in a separate post.

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

HJT LOG - Confirm that my system is clean PLEASE??

I forgot to mention in my previous post that my son plays an online game called Maple Story - does this have anything to do with his infections??

    Here is the HJT log.

Re: HJT LOG - Confirm that my system is clean PLEASE??

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. ShowNew
    2. GetRunKey
    3. HJT

Did you install this PeoplePC stuff? Is this you ISP? This software is considered adware. See: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_136377.htm

I'm going to post two sets of instructions below. Each will be enclosed in separate Quote boxes. Make sure to complete the first one 100% before moving on to the second one.

After completing all of the above and attaching the two logs, move on to my next message!

You have a very bad case of many, many, Virtumonde infections. Let's try to remove some of it the easy way using and automatic removal tool. We will probably still have to do more manual cleaning afterwards since you are so badly infected.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • Now REPEAT the above steps again.
    • When finished running the VundoFix procedure twice, please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot

    Now attach new logs from:
    • ShowNew
    • HJT

Here are the two rapport.txt logs. Rapport 1 is the log for normal mode, rapport 2 is for the safe mode.

I'm now moving on to the vundofix message and will post all necessary logs for that step later.

I forgot to answer your question about PeoplePC software. Yes, I did install it. It is my ISP.

Here is the Vundofix log as well as the shownew and HJT logs run after vundofix.

I think it's finally clean! keeping fingers crossed. I did notice that the line containing "incestuously" in hjt is now gone!

One more thing....if the system is now clean, can I enable System Restore?

Not even close! ;) As you will see from the length of the below instructions, you have a lot more to fix. Don't worry, I will tell you when you are clean and when to toggle System Restore. You should not have turned it off yet. If you did, then just leave it disabled until I tell you that you are clean.

    Uninstall the below software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
My Way Search Assistant <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
OIN <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
Safety Bar <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

You did not follow directions in the READ ME about not using Spybot's Teatimer.

    Now Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
    • Run Spybot and click Mode
    • Select Advanced Mode.
    • Then click Tools and select Resident.
    • Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    • Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    • and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    • Now quit Spybot!
Continue by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of winopn32.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the winopn32.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)
Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of winopn32.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchost.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: yayvuuv - yayvuuv.dll (file missing)

NOTE: HJT will popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop.
Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files"
Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).
If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folder and delete if found:
    C:\Program Files\IntCodec

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ben\Local Settings\Temp

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Thanks for the latest instructions!

I uninstalled all of the software you had listed except My Way Search Assistant. This one was not in the list of programs I could uninstall under control panel??

Will download Sun Java platform this afternoon. I'm on dial up and the download time was over 2 hours at the time I was logged on at a incredibly slow rate. This connection is much faster so I'll try downloading after I post this.

    TeaTimer is now disabled.

Ran Process Explorer and killed the processes you listed.
Ran Killbox and killed the processes you listed. I did get the message about PendingFileRenameOperations. Had to reboot myself.

    IntCodec folder was not found.

Only today's files were in the C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Documents and Settings\Ben\Local Settings\Temp folders so they were left alone.

Ran the following and logs are attached....

    GetRunKey
    ShowNew
    HJT

    Thanks.

Try using this Your Uninstaller! 2006 to uninstall it.

    Did you do this yet.

Use HijackThis to fix the below lines:
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\Ben\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/space.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winopn32 - winopn32.dll (file missing)

Then attach a new HJT log.

    How are things working?
