Connect to internet through ethernet

hi all,

I have a laptop with windows 7 home and a desktop with xp pro installed on it. The desktop is not wireless though. My thought it to connect my laptop to the desktop via ethernet cable and let the desktop run the internet through my laptops connection.

The only problem is, i dont know how to set it properly. It all seems very confusing, especially as windows 7 seems to world itself differently from xp.

Is there a simple thing im missing? Any help would be great.

There are several alternatives to using ICS. That can be a pain and would require that the laptop be running to access the internet from the desktop.

What type of connection do you have - Model and version of modem.
It's possible it has router capabilities and you could wire straight to it from the desktop.
Or alternatively you could buy a router and use that by wire.
Or depending on the modem, if you are connecting by wireless with your laptop, you could add a wireless card to your desktop.

The situation is, that my modem is downstairs and desktop upstairs in bedroom. I was hoping to try and find a way though that the desktop could run the internet without having to put wire all round my house.

I have read your ideas though and think that i would probably be best all round and buy a wireless adaptor for it as you suggested.

There is an alternative to WiFi, you could use the Devolo system that means your house electrical system caries the internet so at any power point in your home you have internet.
