    Hi

I have a laptop running Win XP (Home) and a desktop PC running Win XP (Pro).

I've got a crossover cable and would like to connect them so I can share some files. I can't seem to get it to work though. I have set up a workgroup using the network wizard. The workgroup is called "HOME" on both machines. I don't really know what to do now? Has anyone got anything I can try?

    Thanks

assign computer a an ip address192.168.1.10
assign computer b an ip address192.168.1.11

assign them both the subnet of 255.255.255.0
assign them both the gateway 192.168.1.1

    reboot

    start - run - cmd
    net use * \\192.168.1.10\network_share on computer b
    net use * \\192.168.1.11\network_share on computer a

this will map the next ava. drive letter to the share on the computer

    do you have tcp/ip installed?

System error 1231 has occurred. The network location cannot be reached.

Symptom: When using net view \\computername, you may receive System error 1231.

Resolutions: 1) make sure Client for MS Networks is enabled, 2) make sure you have permission to access it.

    Hi again

Still having no luck. Just to clarify I have done the following:

    *************************************************************************************************************
    *************************************************************************************************************
assign computer a an ip address192.168.1.10
assign computer b an ip address192.168.1.11

assign them both the subnet of 255.255.255.0
assign them both the gateway 192.168.1.1

    reboot

    start - run - cmd
    net use * \\192.168.1.10\network_share on computer b
    net use * \\192.168.1.11\network_share on computer a
    *************************************************************************************************************
    *************************************************************************************************************
System error 1231 has occurred. The network location cannot be reached.

Symptom: When using net view \\computername, you may receive System error 1231.

From each computer, test shares visibility. Enter in a command window:
    "net view 192.168.1.10"
    "net view 192.168.1.10"
    *************************************************************************************************************
    *************************************************************************************************************
With XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
    command window.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
    window.

    *************************************************************************************************************
    *************************************************************************************************************

Another thing I should add. When running "ipconfig /all" in cmd it says the ethernet adapter LAN's media state is disconnected. This is the same for both PC A and B.

The cable I am using has the following configuration...

I am starting to wonder whether this is correct.

Thanks once again for your help! This problem is driving me nuts!

There is a software program called Network Magic that worked for me. It does all your configuring automatically, but there is a $20 yearly charge. They have a trial version. http://www.networkmagic.com/product/

ok first of all, make sure that the tcp/ip setting on both the network cards that you are using are set to be obtained automatically and there should be no dns settings.

    disable your firewalls

then while the computers are connected, on the one with the internet connection (if you want to share the internet that is), click on set up a home or small office network, follow instructions, and make sure that it is selected as the one that connects dirctly to the net (if you dont want net sharing, then make sure you follow the correct options), then make sure you enable file and printer sharing. once its done, just let it finish and select that you dont need to run on other computers

on the 2nd computer, just do the same, and make sure its selected as the computer that access the net through another computer (again if thats what you want). and enable file and printer sharing and finish as normal

make sure that you start both wizards from the beginning just incase it asks you do you want to continue from where you last left off

then on one of the computers, go to start, rum, type in cmd

type in ipconfig /all , write down the ip address of that pc, then type in hostname and write down the name you get there

then on the 2nd pc, go to cmd, and type in ping [the ip address] and see what happens. if it works, then go to start, run, \\[the hostname you got] and press enter and see what happens

then reenable your firewall and run any networking wizard on there to allow the network that you are connected to

hope this helps, let us know how you get on
