Connection question

A neighbor is willing to let me connect to his network, but the adapter he gave me (dlink dwl g120) is not strong enough to enable a consistent connection. If I get one of the " high powered" adapters such as an Alpha, will it increase the strength of his signal or just pick up more networks?

Thanks for your forbearance in my asking such a dumb question,

    Curmudgeon,

One option, your neighbor could get a stronger perhaps N router - don't know the likelihood of that happening - then you would need to make sure your wireless adapter supports N.
I don't know if the alpha you are speaking of would receive the signal better.
I bought a +5db antenna - as my antenna was weaker on my Desktop computer - I was able to move the computer further away from my router and got a better signal.
That would be the cheapest route, unless you already have a +5db gain antenna.
