connection to the server has been reset

First -- various problems started after updating from AVG 7.5 Anti Virus and Firewall (paid version) to the new 8.0 version. Finally, even though I have 7 months to go on my subscription I uninstalled AVG and went with Comodo firewall and Avast anti virus, along with Webroot Spy Sweeper.

One of the problems, which still exists, is that my download speed went from super fast to super slow. I also occasionally get the message "connection to the server has been reset" in which case I lose the download altogether. My connection to web pages still seems to be about the same, which is pretty good. I also get way more "Page can not be found."

I downloaded PC Tools Optimizer2 and ran it and among other things it shows they would make 9 changes to my Internet. I can't make any changes until I purchase the program.

Does anyone out there know what I might do myself to alleviate this problem? I'd appreciate any opinions on the Optimizer2 program, and do you think this might help?
