Connectivity issues.. in XP?!

ok .. so Im 2 days deep with this so Im hopeing that sombody can help me.. I have a compac with XP and trying to connect to Broadband.. (co-ax to modem to nic card I see lights everywhere but no connection.. (this is a friends computer (I HATE XP) the original network card is attached to the motherboard and it wouldnt work

1. I installed the new card. expecting (THE SUPER SMART) xp to see and and it works.. plugged it in to my modem.. re booted and it comes up freesez and says.. Client mac address and a GUID #

so then I take out the cat 5 cable from the NIC card and it boots up and I say cool....then try to instad the drivers from the 3.5 disc they gave me.. it re boots.. then I try to get a connection with my browser.. and the IExplorer in the very bottom of the window say.. C windows\system32\shdoclc.ddd/dnserror.htm..

so in full 3 question...

1 how can I get it working.?.

2. can I delete XP and start new with 2000?

3 is it bad for a machine designed for XP to use 2000?

oh and by the way I m working on a swedish version and dont know swedish. but I can understand most of the stuff on 200o and have fixed my PC many times.. in swedish..

XP works everywhere 2k does, and excels in some areas...

So hate XP all you want...

Anyway,

What is your IP address and Default Gateway?

 

Probably has nothing to do with Windows or the computer.

It might be a simple authentication problem.
