I am considering buying Norton systemworks premier which has antivirus,go back, ghost, optimizer and I am going to add password manager. I have heard good things and am putting them on my new laptop.

    any opinions welcome.

Take this with a grain of salt. I would no way, ever, install Norton's anything on my pc. I'm not a fan. Have had Norton's in the past and it caused me a lot of grief. Your mileage may vary. This was on a Win 98 rig, I don't know if Norton's plays well with XP, but me? I wouldn't chance it.

Same here. Back on my old p3 550mhz that ran xp, norton would hog the living hell out of my resources, and after taking 4 hours to scan, would find nothing.

Then I tried AVG, which took only half an hour, left plenty of resources to spare, and found 4 viruses.

Norton is an overrated piece of crap in my opinion.

I think ZoneAlarm Security Suite is better.

    My suggestions:

    AVG Free Edition
Nero Burning ROM (cd, dvd writing and image backup)
Optimizer, like what? Not installing Nortons is optimizing in itself.
    Password manager, AI Roboform

    My 2 cents worth:
Norton came with my computer and it's the first thing I uninstalled!
I used to have Norton and It is definitely CRAP.

Now I use Zone Alarm Security Suite, AIRoboform and Nero

Norton will hog your resources and disappoint you when it fails to function properly. ;)

    Great feedback,thanks. 2 ?'s
1.How do I get the free edition of AVG instead of the Trial one.
    2. Password mgr. Is it safe to have pass words encripted on The PC or should I carry a separate list in my pocket?

Thanks Toni. AI Roboform can encrypt as well. Also, it is easy to backup, so you dont need it on paper.

Norton was the first thing that I uninstalled too. I've used all of the suggestions and they are all good ones. I wanted to add one more. eTrust Anitvirus has a 1 year FREE subscribtion right now, and it isn't bloated like Norton & McAfee.

    Thanks everyone for your feedback.
I have more questions but I think I should start a new thread, so when my questions are answered on a thread is there something I need to do to close a thread or just leave it alone?
I have more questions but I think it shoud be on a new thread?
    Thanks again.

Is e trust as good as AVG?

Yes. But AVG is really popular right now so you may feel more comfortable going with that. eTrust has been gaining popularity recently, but AVG has been popular for a little longer. You can try both (1 at a time) for a week, and see which one you like best. That's what I did. Just don't lose you're access keys so that you can reinstall. Also with eTrust you can keep getting new 1 year Free subscriptions with different email accounts [added bonus ; ) ].

    Nero 6
    Nero 7
I had Nero 6 on my AMD 2200+ withe 1GB RAM and it worked really well. I upgraded to nero 7 though and had problems with bad disc burns unless I burned at minimum speeds and it was much slower than Nero 6 on that computer. I was forced to reinstall Nero 6. I recently purchased an AMD64 combo with 1GB RAM and installed the Nero 7 package on it and it is incredibly fast, stable and hasn't given me any coasters yet. In short, I recommend Nero 6 if you have an older rig and have no plans to upgrade it or Nero 7 if your hardware is more recent or if you plan to upgrade to a new computer in the near future.

I love these topics. They're so much fun. : )

Traveler723 do you have a router? And if not what firewall do you use? In addition, what malware, spyware, etc...programs do you use? You may as well get hooked up all the way. ; )

I prefer to stick with Nero 6 as well.

I use the windows firewall, was told it was the best.

I downloaded antispyware (beta) program from MSN,seems good.

I don't know what malware is, that is new to me. I am a old DOS hacker beginning 1982 with an IBM PC-XT and my knowledge is not very current so I am really appreciating finding Majorgeeks. Much gratitude for all the feedback.

I have a new Toshiba laptop with a new dual layer DVD-RW CD-RW.

Windows firewall is acceptable. It lacks a lot of configuration, but is a good choice if you dont want to "get involved" with the details. If you are behind a router, or your access point is, then you also have hardware protection, which is better.

Malware is the word now that encompasses spyware, viruses, rootkits, trojans and so on. An all in one word if you will.

Were glad you found us too, welcome aboard.

I just have one more quick suggestion. MS Antispyware (beta) just upgraded to Windows Defender. I would suggest the upgrade. You don't need to uninstall MS Antispware...Defender will install itself in it's place.

    Have Fun! : )

No, you DO need to uninstall AntiSpyware. Micro$$oft suggests you uninstall it first before installing Defender.

They also suggest that if you still have AntiSpyware, to use it till it expires before changing to Defender.

"If you already have Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) installed on your computer, Windows Defender (Beta 2) automatically removes Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) for you." (Microsoft Corporation)

"If you use Windows AntiSpyware (Beta), we strongly recommend that you upgrade to Windows Defender (Beta 2). To upgrade, click the Download Windows Defender (Beta 2) Now button at the top of this page." (Microsoft Corporation)
