OK l am going to try to bullet point this mess -- all within the last month
    • Pretty spiffy PC - main family computer - hubbys graphics. my contract business, daughters hs work stored (science projects)

started getting serious error messages - took to BIL and he said clean up the hard drive too much stuff - did - better

power source died - played musical computers and found a compatible PS hooked it up.. VIOLA! sigh - serious error message back...

started cleaning up with free registery cleaner - suddenly i have the spylocked ie issue. I dont run ie... i run mozilla...

came to major geeks: avast virus:check always have used id; avast spyware: check; ccleaner: check used for years; bazooka spy: my first spyware still use it. found X cleaner this X cleaner that CounterSpy and... sunbelt program... mmm registerywise... or something like that.

and now it just keeps restarting ... on the rare occasion it lets me stay on long enough to right click my computer... there are no system restore points! cant find them anywhere, running in safe mode wont take any changes, start windows and most recent working configuration... didn't fly...

have kept a MSWord doc of changes and serious error messages when i can get to it...

managed to keep system on long enough to run the registry restore. at reboot... worked for 15 minutes... all problems back.

I am on my daughters lap top and live just a few blocks from my work computer. I know its the fourth.

I am a MODERATE but patient computer user so you can leave me a long message or you are welcome to email me, I am pretty sure it is listed... the more detailed the better...

Windows XP professional Service Pack 2.. hummm Athlon 1.0 ghz/256 mb ram

**sniff** damsel in distress - hubby is laughing (mac head)

This may or may not be malware related. The things you mention are indicative of hardware issues ...bad ram, overheating, etc.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
