constant shutdown

i have had this constant issue of the computer shutting down when ever it felt like it so i've first verified the memory module using memtest and found nothing there.

next step was to complete a scan in safe mode using AVG spyware remover (ewido) and clean up as much as possible. it seems to have removed most spyware/malware but there is still something which seems to make the computer shut down.

I figured i may have over looked something. Since i am no expert i was simply hoping someone on here could help. confused

In order to avoid my pc shutting down i've unfortunately had to remove SOME boot options but to compensate i have done 2 scans.

    1. in safe mode with all boot options listed in msconfig (hijackthis.log)
    2. in regular mode with a few options turned off. (hijackthis1.log)

here are both logs. hope this helps!

    tnx

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments. Make sure that you are not using MSconfig to control anything when getting the logs!!!!! We must see logs from Normal Startup mode. This mainly applies to when you get HJT and GetRunKey logs. Thus if you need to disable anything to run the other scans that's okay but just make sure you are in Normal Startup mode while getting the GetRunKey and HJT logs. Also once we start your fixes, you must also remain in Normal Startup mode. Also to reduce your HJT log size, please fix all the O18 lines having Logitech Desktop Messenger on them. For example, fix all lines similar to this one:

    O18 - Protocol: bw+0 - {1FB8B057-A1EB-45EF-815B-2A642FC1786B} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

the issue i have is that if i try to log myself in regular mode, the computer shuts off on it's own.

if i run it in safe mode with networking then i can at least access the net as i am doing now but obviously it is not loading everything...

Will it still work if i run all the diagnostic tools in safe mode or does that change everything?

The procedure actually requests that you run most of the scans in safe mode. The only scans that we want from normal boot mode are GetRunKey, ShowNew and HJT. And they are at the end of the procedure. After running the other steps, you may be in better (but not perfect) shape already.

If you still cannot get anywhere, start by doing the below but we will have to run all steps later. You are very badly infected.

First goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall any of the below if found:
    AproPos
bestoffersnetworks <--- look for anything with BestOffer in it.
    E2Give
    ISTbar
    ISTsvc
    Media Gateway
    SurfAccuracy
    Web_Rebates
    WebOffers

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.bestoffersnetworks.com/uninstall
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {016235BE-59D4-4CEB-ADD5-E2378282A1D9} - C:\Program Files\Aprps\plg0\cxtpls.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfAccuracy] C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy\SAcc.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Gateway] C:\Program Files\Media Gateway\MediaGateway.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebates0] C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sixtysix] C:\WINDOWS\sixtypopsix.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [picsvr] C:\WINDOWS\system32\picsvr\picsvr.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IST Service] C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete (the below if found):
    C:\Program Files\Aprps <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Cgoiz <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\E2G <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Media Gateway <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\picsvr <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mprodbc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\sixtypopsix.exe

    Now run Ccleaner

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Now reboot in normal mode if possible and start working thru all steps in the READ & RUN ME

none of the applications were into the add/remove programs anymore.
C:\Program Files\Cgoiz was present so i removed it. no other folders were there.

i've taken off what you've underlined from the hijackthis.

i've reseted web settings but yet it still seems to crash. i've managed to create the files from getrunkey and shownew.

bitdefender doesn't work for me and Panda scan worked but it crashed when it reached a certain %.

hopefully you could find something else from there that would help!

Tnx again for your help! It's GREATLY appreciated!

Did you know that you have the Digitial Rights Management Rootkit from Sony installed???
Did you install Remote Packet Capture Protocol on your PC youself?

Start by downloading a tool we will need - Pocket KillBox

Save it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
    • select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    • Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
    • Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc\nsvsvc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pstnss.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\iohrlxlv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mouptdlg.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe02a.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MediaAccX.dll
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folders and delete if found:
    C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy
    C:\Program Files\TBONBin
    C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
    Mozilla Firefox (1.0.7)

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Did you know that you have the Digitial Rights Management Rootkit from Sony installed???
Did you install Remote Packet Capture Protocol on your PC youself?

    no to both questions!

Truth is this is my cousins laptop. I've been trying to fix it for her.

since i can't seem to stay in regular mode long enough should i proceed to complete these steps in the safe mode?

Does she still play protected Sony CD on her PC?

Yes for all but where you attach the logs at the end. At that point I want the logs from normal mode.

So this is where i'm @ now...
I can boot up in regular mode! (THHANK YOU!!!!!!) seems like it stays on fine.. BUT when i scan using panda, it crashes everytime!

So i gave up on scanning with that.

Here are the Getrunkeys.bat and shownew.bat generated files and i've also included the Hijackthis in normal mode.

    see anything?
    any other suggestions?

How about the other scans from the READ ME:
    • CounterSpy or AVG AntiSpyware
    • BitDefender Online
You should have uninstall the below old Sun Java version before doing step 6 ( I even asked for this to be uninstalled in msg # 7):

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4

Did you apply the fixME.reg patch???? It does not look like it.

    Try it again.

Do you get a success message?

If you get a success message, attach a new log from GetRunKey.

Also uninstall WinPcap 3.1 beta3 since you said your did not install it.

If you want to remove the Sony Rootkit, see the below:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34904.html

By the way, how are things running??

  13. SmithFup

    SmithFup Private E-2

it shouldn't appear as if it was still here.
truth is, when i tried to uninstall using the add/remove program it kept on giving me an error msg so i just decided to completeley delete the Java folder which contained J2Se E.5.

downloaded the version 6 as requested and is installed.

as for bitdefender (online scanner) that didn't work at all! and finally the AVG spyware that one goes through completely so i'm doing the scan right now.. about 10 min left to it... until now a few adware but nothing of higher risk!

as for the sony rootkit how do i remove that? and what about the RPCP ?

    tnx again for ur help

But it is still there. Deleting folder does not uninstall the program.

Run this Getting Uninstall Programs List From The Registry and attach the log.

Did you miss message # 12?

yes i had missed that post sorry!
i will follow the steps! tnx!

here is the file u requested.. and as for AVG... it crashed after having completed 75% of the scan.... =o/

Okay! And here is another registry patch to take care of the old Sun Java version. Again make sure you get a success message after applying this registry patch. And then attach a new ShowNew log.

Sorry! I got side track with some other threads! Did you do the older fixME.reg patch again yet (see msg # 12)

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixSJ.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

  19. SmithFup

seems like all of a sudden it just doesn't even wanna let me get to see my desktop! As soon as i go into normal mode it crashes again!

    Any ideas?

To answer your other question yes i ran FixME.reg. Both in safe and normal mode.

Since i can't get back to normal mode i have only ran FixSJ.reg in safe mode.

It is starting to sound like you have more problems that just malware.

Attach new logs from ShowNew and GetRunKey so I can check the results of the registry patches. Your last GetRunKey log indicated that the fixME.reg patch did not work. You have to be more specific in your answers. I asked if you received success messages when you applied to two patches.

    Do you use AOL Antispyware?

    Do you use Yahoo AntiSpyware?

You have McAfee Personal Firewall Express installed which is probably part of the stuff AOL installed on your PC. It may not be a good idea to mix the use of McAfee with other security products from Norton/Symantec. This could cause problems.
