    Hi,

I am new here and have been trying to come up with fixes for this computer. I have purchased Kaspersky Anti-Virus Software and thought that this would cure my problems...but it has not!

My system is continuously restarting itself and then to top it all off it states upon reboot that windows has encountered a serious error. Kaspersky has been detecting that the following is running and I have no idea what it is? %systemroot%\system32|dumprep 0 -k ?? I have continuously searched on the net looking to see if this is some type of virus that I am not aware of? I have read your instructions before sending a post and have downloaded hijackthis and created a log file which I am hoping that someone out there can help me before I throw my computer out the window! I am computer literate and can diagnose most problems; however, this one has stumped me!

    Please see my hijackthis file:

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 12:29:55 PM, on 16/04/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16640)

Any assistance that you can give me would be greatly appreciated! I shut my computer down last night and it completely rebooted itself so I just don't know where the problem lies.

    Thank you again!

    Hi nssunset,
    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please post your HJT again as an attachment (use the manage attachments button beneath the posting window) so that I can take a look at it. dumpreg sounds more like it might be a hardware problem, but it would help to see your log to see if there might be malware present.

    Thanks.

    Hi nssunset,

The problem you're describing is a software problem, not malware. It may be caused by discrepancies in an image. The dump files are produced for diagnostic purposes. You can remove this feature from your autostarts either via HijackThis or you can prevent them from running altogether by setting the amount of space they are alotted to none. It's indicative of a problem which you may want to pursue in the Software or Hardware Forums. As long as you keep your HJT, you can pull it back out of the backups if you need it later.

    Please do the following:

First, if you do not use Windows Messenger (not to be confused with MSN Messenger!!) I would like you to run Disable/Remove Windows Messenger

Then, please run HijackThis and select Do a system scan. Put checkmarks next to the following entries and after you close all your browser windows click on FIX.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

When you finish, just close HijackThis.

Let me know if this helps.

    Hi Abri,

Thanks for the post! I have down what you had suggested. As it turns out I did not have windows messenger on the computer only a shortcut that was still in start up menu. I downloaded eversthome edition and this is a GREAT diagnostic tool! Hats off to the person that invented that one... I ran it and states when I have even firefox open the system memory is almost used up? Maybe this is where some of the problem lies? When I boot the machine up it states 64 mb ram and 400 mb of memory which there must be some bad ram as it should not equal 400!

    I will post the log.

Thanks again for all of your help!

    Hi Abri,

Here is the Everst log.... Did what you said; however, it would not boot properly afterward...I used Reghelppro to tweak the registry....working okay now...however, i think it is my ram?!

    Hi Abri,

I did what you said and it seemed to work fine until I went to reboot...then it had problems. I rebooted in safe mode and then rebooted to normal then ran reghelppro and tweaked the registry...seems to work fine now....(crossing fingers). I have included a report from everesthome hopefully it will post....Looks like I have a ram issue as well and there is definately something wrong as it shows 400 mb memory...which cannot be????

    Hi nssunset,

Your attachment never made it for some reason, but it might be better for you to attach it to a post in the Software or Hardware Forums. Not sure what kind of attachment it is, but if it isn't one of the file types that are allowed, you may need to zip it.
