I am continuing to have malware issues on my computer. It has infected internet explorer and will not let me go to any website. It has also opened up three or four search engines in the explorer toolbar, i.e. ask.com, yahoo.com.

I have run the "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" off of the website. I was able to get through all of the steps entirely. Attached are two of the logs and on the next post will be the other two logs.

The tinyproxy infection came from a facebook email on 12-3-08.
I aslo have another virus that Mcafee finds that if won't remove, W32/DMSPatch File name is C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmserver.dll

Computer is currently running Windows XP Media Center Home Ed.

Network Diagnostics for windows xp is now reading a message saying: Windows has detected a problem with the Winsock provider catalog on this computer. Would you lke Windows to reset the catalog to the default configuration. I'm not 100% sure that this diagnstic tool is not part of the malware.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

From Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options, Connections and make sure that you are not configured to use a proxy.

Now click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System Rile Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

Please run the below then reboot. After reboot run it one more time.

    Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Now we need to use ComboFix again.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Under Internet Options and Lan Settings the Proxy Server box was checked, so I unchecked it and I can now get on the internet.

Ran the System Rile Checker and that the end it asked for my XP professional CD2 to install some stuff to the DLL cache. I bought the CPU with the program already on it and I didn't get a windows disk. It's a Sony Vaio VGC-RB60G w/ Windows XP Media Center. So I don't know how to fix anything without the disk.

I ran everything else in sequence as ordered. Everything appears to be running well and my internet seems to be running a little faster.

My McAfee still found the DMServer virus and said that it could not be quarantined. Then it said it repaired something regarding the virus.
If you want I can show you the Detection logs from McAfee.

    Thanks for the continued help.

You need a Windows XP disk for the service pack revision that you are running.

Yes post the log. It may be just in System Restore or could be a False Positive as your logs are clean.

This is how McAfee describes the DMSPatch virus:
    Name: W32/DMSPatch
    File: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{C061ECF6-B833-4930-AE72-F87AA0842291}\RP682\A0054434.dll
    Process: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
Process Description: Generic host process for Win32 Services

    Also:

These virus and trojans popped up on my McAfee scan today and it quarantined them. Wanted to know if they are real or part of the cleaning I did and how to remove if need be.

    Virus: Quarantined: W32/Koobface.worm
    C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE{C061ECF6-B833-4930-AE72-F87AA0842291}\RP667\A0052531.EXE

    Trojan: Quarantined: BackDoor-TProxy.gen
    C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE{C061ECF6-B833-4930-AE72-F87AA0842291}\RP666\A0052459.EXE

Also three more of the same trojan ending in:
    \A0052471.EXE
    \A0052487.EXE
    \A0052547.EXE

As I suspected it is just in System Restore and they are too negligent to point that out to you. Just complete the below final instructions. During these steps you will toggle System Restore which will fix this.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
