HELP!!!! In my start menu, the control panel and printers and faxes shortcut icons have been changed to the normal yellow folder and when I open control panel the printers and faxes icon has changed to the white icon when the file type is unknown. this also is the case when i click on the control panel icon on the left in my computer.
anyone know how to resolve this??!!

    Hi..

you will be honoured to know that this is my first posting on this site! ... well anyway!
The icons that you refer to cannot be changed easily to alternative ones.. so I think you have a problem with the .dll that these icons are found in, I would suggest that using 'explorer' you go to Win.../system32 and look for 'shell32.dll' this is where the icons for control panel and printer (amongst many others) are stored... you cannot open this file in explorer to see if all is well... you are simply verifying that the .dll is present. If it is not, you will need to run the 'system file checker' ... just occured to me!... you are running Win XP??? If the file is present I will continue to brainstorm and find a way to re-assign the icons... please give more info in your next posting!... hope any of this helps! :)

one thing to try is the Repair function of Powertoys for XP ( the tweakUI module ) it has an option for repairing icons, bare in mind if you have changed any icons yourself these will be reset to default icons.

install the TweakUI module and once run the repair option is at the bottom of the menu.

can you post a screenshot of your Control Panel window?

Have you at any point used a program to change system or folder icons... what i'm thinking is that your shell32.dll file is a bit corrupted!?!

OK I've played around with themes and visual styles, one theme changed the my computer, control panel, recycle bin and network places icon but I've uninstalled that now as I no longer wanted it. Here are 2 screenshots, one showing my start menu and the other my control panel, as requested.

Try this app its similar to TweakUI and its repair function but does alot more besides, the options you want are the Rebuild Icon Cache and Restore Windows Icons.

Do the Rebuild Icon Cache first then Restore Windows Icons from the Options Icon which is the Hammer and Screwdriver icons at top menu.
