Conundrum (Internet Speed)

    Hello,

When I download the itunes software (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) the download speed ranges from 200 to 350 KB/S

When I try downloading anything else from servers I know to be fast (YOUTUBE for example) the speed never goes above 50 KB/S and mostly centers itself around 20 KB/S.

I think that if there are any problems related to my hardware or software that could curtail my download speed I wouldn't be able to download at 350 KB/S at all (not from apple.com nor from anywhere else).

The problem isn't related to a single server - why then would youtube give me no more than 50 KB/S - when google servers are known for their speed? This is best manifest when opening google cached pages.

Here are two speed tests I did on speedtest.net

It is clearly indicative to me that I should get at least 100 KB/S if the server supports it.

    Does anyone have a clue?

    P.S. I'm using a 3G connection (Vodafone Turkey) (Huawei 3G Stick K3765)

Thank you very much in advance.

If it's any consolation, my current average download speed at speedtest.net is 15.36 Mbits/s(=1966.08 KB/s). That's over a period of several months. My download speeds from youtube are pretty much the same as your's.

Besides the fact that you don't know how much traffic is hitting those servers at any givin minute, speeds will vary. But this is speculation on my part I can't find hard data to back it up but, when your downloading a file from a website you can have multiple threads making it faster. Downloading a HTML page might not have that bandwidth available. Sounds logical.
You can change max conections in IE to see if this changes.

I wasn't able to find the registry entries for firefox. I would sure love to increase its default memory slot.

    The problem persists.

What are your download speed from filehippo, youtube and this link specifically (http://ifile.it/21otrnb/9780521585712.pdf)?

Minutes ago I started downloading ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download - another fast server) and the download speed hovered around 250 KB/S - just before that I was downloading a video from youtube at 20 KB/S!!!:confused

The problem isn't with just one or two sites.
Is it possible that the internet is suffering from a general congestion or a general lack of bandwidth?

Thank you very much for your replies.

I've not downloaded anything from filehippo for a looonnng time, and didn't try the pdf file. The average download speed for the ubuntu file was 921.6KByte/s but at times it hovered around 1.35MByte/s. Which, in part at least, supports foogoo's logical conclusion.
Though anything is possible I suppose, as foogoo suggested it's more likely that the server you are downloading from is congested at the time you are trying to download. It's also possible that the server(s) of your ISP are experiencing some heavy traffic for your local area at the same time as you're downloading.
