I have a new computer with microsoft office 2003. My old PC has 2000. I put some old documents on my new PC (Excel and Access) and I am unable to open the documents under office 2003. I heard there's a way to convert these files? Please advise, thanks

    Hi

Try the viewer converters here http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/HA010449811033.aspx

But also check your Office 2003 as it should open them fine (Office 2007 would need the compatiblity pack) by default, so what error messages do you get when opening a Office 2000 file in Office 2003?

Plus are these Excel and Access files stored on a network drive, if they are copy them to the host PC (aka the one your working on) and see if they open.

When I double click on a saved spreadsheet it "can not be found". It asks to check the spelling and verify the location of the file.

It also says....if you trying to open a file from your list of most recently used files on the file menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.

For the access database I try to open it says:

Microsoft Office Access can't find the database file ******

Make sure you entered the correct path and file name.

All I did was save a database and spreadsheet to a flash drive and transfered it to my new PC with Office 2003.

This rather sounds as if you are double clicking the filenames on the most recently used list, which may still be pointing at your flash drive, rather than double clicking the file in the folder you have transferred it to.

You may also need to reset the default Save location in your Office programs.

I should be able to save a document/spreadsheet onto a flash drive and open it on any computer I want without any issues. That's all I'm really trying to do, but the original documents were saved under Office 2000 and I'm trying to open them under 2003.

I misunderstood - sorry. Yes, if you are simply moving the flash drive from one comp to another then you should be able to open any files it contains by using File > Open in the application. What method are you using to try to open these files?

The Office 2003 issue is a red herring. 2003 and 2007 can read files created by earlier versions of Office without assistance in any form.

Sorry, I figured it out. Problem was I was saving shortcuts from my original PC. I had to find the original file and transfer that instead of the shortcut...duh! Thanks for your help everyone...
