Cookies in different folders

The computer I use here at work is running Win2K Pro. Now I notice there are really 2 places were cookie files are being kept - under "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Cookies" (aka Cookies while being describe in this post) and in the temporary internet files (TIF) folders. I use the AnalogX CookieWall program (great one to use!) to keep and to remove new ones once I'm finished browsing (I don't use the "delete automatically" feature).

After I delete all my temporary internet files (on occasion) including the cookies in that folder, (CookieWall still contains my defined kept cookies) when coming into sites I frequent (like this one) that needs username/password (the cookies I keep), I still have to go through the log-in process for all of them even though the kept cookies are in the Cookies folder.
This is what I assume is taking place... When I open the Cookies folder I notice more cookies are stored there after browsing. When I delete only the new cookies from CookieWall only the ones on my keep list remain. I take it the Cookies folder will only store cookies encountered while browsing. When starting IE (vs 5.5) at a later time, I thought/assume at least IE would read the Cookies folder to get that information and "switch" to the TIF folder afterwards so the login entry wouldn't have to be done again .

Can someone enlighten on what the purpose of the Cookies folder is and how it differs from the TIF folder, if I haven't already answered my own question? How are the two related and not related? Does IE ever use the Cookies folder for future browsing? Any info would be helpful. I have a basic understanding of the TIF folder, but is there something a bit more in depth that one may not be aware of?

    Thanks

    Ken

Hi, You have caused me to ask a question.

Cookies have a used by date so if you only keep the originals won't they eventually be out of date and become useless.

I am not fussy about my cookies and normally don't have to log in. Peace Mal

The cookies do get updated. I see that when I look at the Accessed column for them. All I want to more insight of the storing of cookies in both of these places. Ken

Thanks for answering the question. Unfortunately I have never bothered much about cookies and can't help you and I use the Opera browser. I did use IE years ago but downloaded an update that did not install properly and was so vexed I just gave it away. I did go to fourmes to find out my problem but an answer did not turn up till 6 months later. I hope some one else can help you. Peace Mal
