Cookies? Spyware? Help

    I did a search for cookies and came up with a whole slew of posts here concerning spyware, cookies, ad-aware, and now I'm really confused. I have 288 cookies. Is that a lot? Do they do any harm? I think I need some of them to preserve the "personalized" web pages I've set up. How do I identify the ones I want? And where does ad-aware and spyware come in? I have ZoneAlarm. Is this the same thing? Thanks!

    1st off, the amount of cookies you have means nothing.

    2ndly, zone alarm does not protect you against cookies, or adware, only intrusion.

    I would suggest the following.

    Go here : http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

    Download Adaware and run it on your machine. It will let you know how much spy/adware you have and will help you clean it.

    Good advice!

    I use Ad-Aware or Spybot and it erases only tracking cookies. It has never once deleted a cookie that keeps my settings. And thats using default scan settings.

    Nope NO flash/picture sigs are allowed at present!



    As for the cookies I wouldnt worry too much if you run Ad-Aware as that as said in posts above will remove the tracing/data miner ones.

    ZA is more for tracking and blocking unauthorised programs from sending data out ( as well as the main one of blocking incomming traffic ) its a useful tool for finding out what does want to send info out into cyberspace.

    Flash and images in sigs wont happen due to the slowdown it causes on page loads. Everyone wanted Avatars, so I have those, but to let people do that in sigs would be way too distracting. Hope that clears it up :)
