    Hey all!

Just thought I'd point you Lounge Lizzards at the DCing forum to look at some statistics for our Team. They're quite impressive, if you ask me!

We've almost nailed the Top 100 now, it'd be really awesome to get a little extra to push us over the edge :) I know I'm running flat out, and I expect everyone else is too :D If they're not, well, they need a tweak round the ear then a tweak to their PC!

goldy, I need help setting up folding in Debian Linux- what flavor are you using?

Glad to help and I will be gone for a week on vacation with plenty of cycles available.

    Good job guys!! :D

Funny you should say that Goldie.......now I have my new PC I was reading the folding forum postings last week and figured I might be able to make this baby burn some CPU in the folding favor :D In a couple of weeks I actually get a free weekend so will look into it more. Not being so geekily fluent I need time to get my head around it all:) Watch your PM box buddy ;)

Yep, PM me if you need help :)

BooM - right now I'm running SuSE 9.3 on my desktop, but the setup for FAH is no different with Debian. The setup is fairly simple - you don't need to compile since it's just a binary - and then run the binary from a terminal window (after chmoding it to let you execute it). A bit like this:
    Code:
    chmod +x FAH4Console-Linux.exe
    ./FAH4Console-Linux.exe

All the benchmarks are done on the Linux core on a P4 2.8GHz :D

As I say, PM me if you want help, or PM me and I can give you my email address :)

Are you using a GUI within KDE?

I have the client set up but not much to watch in terminal!

I will let it cook as I am headed to bed.

    Thanks for the help above.

AFAIK there isn't a GUI for Linux distributed by Stanford, but there might be a progress reader written for X11 out there. Either way, the console folds significantly faster than any GUI version, so I would suggest you stick with that.

There are some instructions on the net to install FAH as a service daemon (analogous to a Windows Service), but I've never really delved into that since I don't mind having the console window open :) However, I'll certainly look some stuff up and perhaps write a little guide for FAH on Linux systems :D

Thanks, and pm me on the status or the links for x11. I have it running and hope to help out what I can.

Wow, this app is pegging my cpu usage at 100%. I'm going to have to set this up to start when I go to bed, and stop when I'm using the computer. Unless.....

Actually, the 100% CPU usage is perfectly normal. It sacrifices its CPU usage to ALL other programs... i.e. if any other process on your system needs the power it will give it up. All it does is use the spare CPU cycles, which is why it seemingly takes up 100% CPU usage when you're not doing anything.

You can throttle it down so it only takes up a smaller maximum percentage if you want to (perhaps if you've got heat issues). You must edit the client.cfg file to do this, or use the control panel with the Graphical client.See here for more details: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=38418

And BooM... I got some good news! You can get an Applet for KDE which lets you look at the progress of folding: http://members.shaw.ca/khessels/kfolding/ I'll be trying this out in a few minutes. :)

I found one last night also, but could not get it to run. I am working on the one you referenced, but alas it is not an easy task.

My power went off yesterday, and the app does not seem to be running, Would the applet kickstart it again?

Yes. The applet will manage the running of the client.

The applet is a little confusing, as it adds an icon to the KDE menu, but clicking on that icon doesn't do anything. What you need to do is right click your panel, Add to Panel -> Applet -> Folding@Home.

Then configure the applet with the path to your executable, work directory and username and team number (12072). Then right click on the Folding@Home logo and click start. That will start the process.

This should start the Folding@Home process each time you start KDE from now on, until you remove the panel. Right click and the Status menu lets you see some stats, including a quick link to the team stats and a 3D view of the protien you are currently working on.

If you find another visualisation program for F@H do tell :)

I am hung on the C++ programs. I have tried to update and see the program has been installed, but ./configure leaves errors.

This is not a lounge topic anymore... but keeps F@H on top to remind all to participate.

    ;)

Yes, I was hoping we could use this thread as a kinda awareness/questions thing so we could get some more people online :)

If you want to start a thread in the forum about F@H on Linux, we can continue the discussion in there, and chances are it'll be a good thing to sticky. Speaking of which I need to get a good roundup of tweaks and stuff to sticky down there.
