If you right click the files you need to copy and select them as read only, does this work? Then copy them into the System 32 folder.

Look at the bottom on the general tab. It should be the same for XP I believe.

It is the same and the attributes say that a read only file is.

the files are for a dutch translator program and to get it to run in English it asks that i copy the 2 files to system 32.

    I don't understand the difficulty.

Are you getting these files from the net or a CD?

Can you not simply download (not copy) them to some suitable place on the hard drive,
    e.g c:\temp
Then you can select these files and set their attributes as required
and copy them to their eventual resting place

    Haha, nice anatogy there.

You just need to right click the files, select properties, tick the read only box, then click ok. After doing for both, just copy them into X:\Windows\System 32, X denotes the default drive letter (usually C).

I asked my question because you say you are using Internet Explorer.

Why, if you are not downloading?

You should be using Windows Explorer.
Hold the windows key down and hit the letter E.

Open up two copies of Windows Explorer and position them side by side. In the first window find the two files you want to move or copy. In the second window drill down until you get to C:\Windows\system32 If you can't get to it, it means that you do not have file systems showin and you need to correct that.

Now go back o the first window, hold down the ctrl key and highlight the first file, then (still holding down the ctrl key) highlight the second file. Hold down your right mouse button and drag the two highlighted files over to the second window until they are in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder and release the right mouse button. You will be given choices. select - "Copy here" and you should be good to go.

    Thank u guys
i am a complete novice when it comes to such things and have a very limited knowledge of the internals of the PC so what was obviously a simple task for you became a complete new learn for me.

during the time i tried to get the thing to work i became suspicious that what in fact he was trying to do was insert some sort of crack to the program so i have sent him on his way.

for future reference does anybody know a web page that explains in IDIOT how to insert into SYSTEM 32

It's a simple case of opening window explorer and moving whatever you want into the system32 folder by using the right mouse button and dragging. When you release the right mouse button, you get a menu with choices. Possible choices are to move here or to copy here. Those would be the two you would be interested in.

Likewise you an do this in reverse. You an take something that it is system32 folder, right click on it and drag it to your desktop. When you release the right mouse button, you get choices. You might select move here but I think windows will complain and tell you that you can't move anything out of system32 folder so the best you can do is to copy something.
(I do that when I want to take something from one computer and put it on another; I copy to a USB drive or a floppy disk).
