My friend has just built a PC using a 8400 core 2 duo CPU and an asus P5 something mobo (it has both ddr2+3 slots, can't remember the model number)

Anyway, he said it was getting very hot idling at 80 deg C! I went to his house stripped it out cleaned up the thermal paste on there and applied some AS5, and put it back together after doing this we went into the bios and it said the CPU was between 90-100 deg C it hit 103 at the most!

It is running the stock fan which he will change, but still this can't be right. I think the mobo is faulsely reporting the temp. We put a temp sensor from one of those drive bay thingys in the heatsink and the hottest it got was about 45 degrees.

When I removed the old thermal paste it wasn't burnt on or stuck to the chip at all. The PC it's self doesn't 'feel' hot I would expect when a CPU is running at 103 degrees some heat would be able to be felt through the case.

The voltage was at 1.17v IIRC

    Any ideas?

Heat sensors built into a PC mobo are approximate at best.
It sounds like you're using good technical methods to troubleshoot the problem.

If you can lay your finger tip on the CPU heatsink with the processor under load and not say "Ouch!"....it's probably OK.;)
That's the one heat sensor that I trust more than any other.

I'd not worry any more about it.
