I hope all of you are well and haven't lost anyone due to this virus. Reality has hit in the US. Businesses are shutting down for March. Our library is closed so i'm not working. People are freaking out and resorting to hoarding. Just WTF on the whole toilet paper thing?? My husband went to the store for me yesterday afternoon. He asked me what I wanted him to grab for dinner. My response: ummm...why don't you go in and see what's available. I'm not sure I've ever said that in my lifetime. No chicken, no hamburger...we did get a pork shoulder(which just reminded me I'm doing a slow cooked one and better get it in the cooker. lol)

My daughter is just home from Madrid, Spain where she was studying abroad. She (and we for the most part) will be staying away from people as per the guidelines that are suggested. I'm bored already. I asked my husband to go get a chain saw. I'm going to start taking down little scrub trees in my yard that were just allowed to grow all over before we moved in. Of course, he had to immediately go out and chain saw one down when he came home. I have to say, it looked fun.

I think I'll search from some hiking trails and drag my daughter out to one...maybe take my camera.

    Stay safe.

I feel the virus will not affect as many as the economic loss. Businesses closing, schools closing...no paychecks...no day care....my son-in-law depends on income teaching music in schools as well as gigs....all canceled. Their trip to the US is canceled due to this economic turn down. Their new visa's may not be valid any longer......it is mass hysteria as far as I can see.

Agreed. This is certainly going to hurt people financially for sure. I was talking to my friend who relies on clients as well and it's already having an effect and it's only been a few days.

Ali went to the local store for a few supplies.....she said there was absolutely nothing there. Our county tax collectors office has locked its doors...only phone calls. Diane is heading into town to see if Wally world is still open. ( There have not been any lack of supplies there. )

:( My daughter's restaurant closed down for the duration. Philly is on lockdown so all non essential businesses must close as of today. I am really hoping she is able to get the unemployment they are saying is available since she won't get paid at all.

Good luck getting supplies. Btw, Amazon is still delivering. I'd imagine you can get food from there if you have to.

Same in UK, people are panic buying - and 10 to 1 it's the fit ones, seems a selfish world. Like several majorgeeks, I am probably one of the really suseptable ones, with ichmaic heat desease, and type 2 diabtes, over 75..... It looks like our age group are going to be confined for 3- 4 months, and some of our age group have few family and freinds , so we will have to take Italy's example of singing fromthe windows to keep our chins up.
I agree it seems over the top, but, keeping a distance in any groups, or, sensible isolation may well help.
My best wishes to all, all over the world.
In a way, I get a feeling it's natures way of culling our species, as we have tended to allow our population to grow, with little regard of our planet, and other species...........
Perhaps all governments should be prepared to pay everybody who has to stop working, regardless, for it to work, - but then I am not a doctor, and can only hope that a vaxination is available much quicker than usual- apparentlysome English laboratory seems to be on to a possible vax, already....

Over here it is more of the same with the F1 Grand Prix cancelled last weekend and all football games suspended for at least 5 weeks, libraries closed, gyms closed, cinemas closed, concerts cancelled, stage shows cancelled, police have stopped doing all random breath tests and random drug test in their vans, gatherings of more than 50 people are not allowed and here, in my state Victoria, we are now operating under emergency laws that give law enforcement sweeping powers to combat people that are not self isolating or not closing their businesses when instructed.

The supermarkets get restocked during the night and it is gone within an or two from when they open. The supermarkets here have been rationing toilet paper, tissues, hand sanitizer, wipes, pasta, rice, flour, tinned tomatoes, tinned tuna, tinned salmon, minced steak, chicken, lamb, beef and lots of other stuff too. Some of the supermarkets are opening one hour earlier and only let the disabled or pensioners shop for that hour as they have been disadvantaged by able bodied people beating them to the food and toilet paper.
A friend called in on Friday and he works in the paint department at a large Bunnings Store (they sell hardware) and he was saying that they can't keep up with people buying methylated spirits...........he was saying they got 4 pallets and put them on the shelves and this would usually last a fortnight and it was gone in 4 hours so a couple of days later another 4 pallets were delivered and same again...........he said he has never seen anything like it.
My wife went to the local Woolworths for the 7am early open for pensioners and found there was a huge queue of pensioners and disabled people that had been waiting since 6am. By the time my wife got inside there wasn't very much left to choose from in fresh foods but at least we got some vegetables and fruit, some milk, some bread and some fresh eggs.........lucky that three or four times a year, we buy our meat in bulk from a wholesale butcher and won't need meat for probably another month at least but our vegie patch still isn't producing since we moved here last year so we still need vegies.

Best wishes to everyone and hopefully you or your families don't catch CoVid-19 ..............or if you do, I hope you have a speedy recovery.

    Stay strong MGs

We went out to get some cheap petrol and check our PO box and I had a bit of a grin when I saw a bumper sticker on an SUV that said:-

Today I ran out of toilet paper and I have been forced to wipe my bum with lettuce leaves.........I fear this is just the tip of the iceberg!

Hopefully it'll be like it was here. People were going crazy. The shelves were empty and the media was making it worse by reporting that the shelves were empty and people were hoarding stuff. Then yesterday I went and it really wasn't bad. The store I went to had a chance to restock and there weren't a ton of people there. Our liquor stores were closed. I feel like that was a really bad decision.

    hahahaha!! That's great

My kid at home is 21. She pretty much hasn't come out of her room.

Yeah it has been crazy over here and yesterday a supermarket employee was stabbed because he was enforcing the one pack of toilet rolls per customer rules. I hope you are right Laura but crazy stupid seems to be at a very high level over here. Yesterday we went shopping for the first time in a couple of weeks to try a get some fresh vegies and bread and milk and fresh eggs and it was like a warzone and there were empty shelves everywhere. In the end, to get most of what we wanted we had to go to Woolworths, Coles, IGA and Aldi when usually we would go to just one supermarket for everything. Lucky we have a fairly well stocked pantry and freezer so we won't be starving any time soon although we may have to have pasta or rice dishes a bit more often.
Hopefully people over here will soon realise that it is not the apocalypse and food won't be running out and they stop hoarding stuff. Ebay has been naming and shaming people selling toilet paper and hand sanitiser at exorbitant prices and closing their accounts. One guy was selling toilet paper and hand sanitiser at ten times the original cost by buying packs of 30 rolls then opening the pack and selling them two rolls at a time.
It is a sad thing to say but hard times bring out the worst in some people and they are happy to profit on other people's hardship......
Laura, I hope you and your family stay healthy and get through this troubling time without too much financial hardship .....best wishes :)

Just saw this in the The Age newspaper

The crazy hoarding is not slowing down over here so Woolworths just introduced the harshest rationing on almost every product they sell and the new limit is two items per customer with no exceptions

I used 4 public establishments today with no trouble. A doctor's office, a Cracker Barrel for a lunch date with my wife, a convenience store for a couple beers after work and a dollar store to pick up a few days worth of goods to add to the cabinet stash. No crowd or rush at any place. Maybe just my good luck with the places I choose. I did notice that people were picky on the products they're buying. Such as cup of soups. Most flavors were empty, but the chicken flavor had a good few left. Tuna in the individual packs only had regular flavor left and a good few of those. Beer cooler low but wine section still stocked up.

We get water and MRE's after storms or disasters. I think that should be set up now for distribution before everywhere goes on lock-down. Salvation Army comes around every neighborhood with cleaning materials and supplies for who need these things before the stores open back up. I sure some folks on fixed incomes could use some of those things now.

Bars and clubs are closed for 30 days. Restaurants are limited to 50% capacity. Beaches that remain open are limited to groups of 10 people max. And this during spring break.

    But things go on......

SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THE TOILET PAPER THING TO ME! Omg...there is no logical explanation to it. I mean to stab someone because they aren't allowing you to buy more than one pack?

Amazon has been pulling marketplace people doing this. One guy in Tennessee bought $17,000 worth and was selling it on Amazon. They pulled it and other places wouldn't let him sell it. He had it all in his garage. Finally he 'donated' it to authorities or something like that. This are the type of people who you hope karma comes in and doesn't treat them kindly.

I would suggest that they get home before Australia cuts off any flights coming in. That's what happened here. We got our daughter home, but there are still americans who are in Morocco just trying to get back.

On the more pleasant (or really sad depending on how you look at it), I found a new series to watch that seems really good. "Suits" It has several seasons out so it's been out for a while, but that'll make it last longer.
I also ordered a jigsaw puzzle. I'm not sure how that will go. lol
I may get my pastels out and start to draw again. It's been years.

I got denied my first entry today for failing the vitals exam needed to get into my kidney doctor's office. I had an emergency last friday that the doctor called in because of potassium level too high in my blood. Told me to leave work and go to the nearest e.r. room. After 3 hours they got it down enough to let me go home, but made an appointment for today to go talk to the doctor about the next step. Had a 99.1 temperature and couldn't get in the office. Gave me a sheet for Quest to read my potassium and guess what. Nope, not with any fever, ain't getting in.

Had a scheduled follow-up with my pain-management team tomorrow and guess what... nope, not with a fever.

So my potassium could give me a heart attack, but i get to just wait because of a .4- that's point.four temperature.

@LauraR thanks for the concern and suggestions. Yes, USA. Florida panhandle. I was in the ER friday. Was at work doing fine when my kidney doctor office called and sent me to ER. Wasn't feeling bad at all. ER did their thing. So now I don't know if my levels stayed good or not and can't get a blood test. If it's no big deal, they shouldn't have made me quit work last friday and spend the time and money on ER then. What gets me is I see drive-thru testing going on on the news. I guess it all depends on where you live.

@wile e coyote it has been all over news that prisons are releasing some inmates to relieve the crowding situation. I have a step-son on his last 5 months of a ten year sentence and Florida has cancelled all family visitations till past April. I guess moms might carry it in on weekends but all the guards who go back into the communities after work can't carry anything in when they come back for the next shift.

It seems that several countries medical teams have found possibilities of a cure in drugs already manufactured, for other illnesses, and with the lasm of those who have had this virus, and recovered.
I , also read that Canada have replicated the virus in a laboratory....... I also read that there are many test trials going on in different countries, or, asking for volunteers for trials... The mind boggles.
Others seem to think it is all down to man's encroachment on the natural forests, disturbing natures setup, and of eating everything from bats to monkeys. This could be the way new virus/desease is cused (Blood in the meat?)
Whatever the truth is, I just hope it is contained soon....Otherwise some of us might not get back as geeks, as we seem to be very vulnerable.
Apparently the first 7 days can be the decider of if you get it bad, or, not- as after 7 days, if you feel a little better, and do not get the breathing problems, you might get off light -I hope that one turns out to be the case for most.
We are so lucky in the UK to have (whats left of it) the NHS.
We certainly feel so much gratitude to those who risk their lives in treating us specially when they can put themselves at such risk-No special suits are perfect, and the A&E part must be dodgy for Nurses, reception, ambulance staff, and doctors
    Get lucky- but not paranoid.

Hey all and glad all ok.

Me coincidence I've been off work this week. planned in Dec holiday, which was lucky as took my dad out shopping Thur and Fri and TBH only bought what they would for a normal two week shop. They do shop online but delivery slots are scarce now and 2 weeks time. But I'm at home now so they should be ok as I can be the one going out as I will need to as I'm back in work next week and have been keeping up with NHS (out health dept) email alerts and internal Hospital info as I have remote access.

Lots in place dispite MSM reports, which IMHO onpinion have caused more panic than we needed.

As I say I'm in work next week and the hospital I work in is one of the UK 4 that deal with infectious diseases, so we are best placed to deal with this, but depends on the scale of it, looking like we may and USA et al will need to bunker down for a month at least. I have a few video meetings as the planned trip to Belfast next week is rightly off, but after that it depends what I can do but likely as most of my work currently is research I will be working from home and going in, when and if needed.

My hats off to all the shop workers who are working just as hard as medical staff in keeping us going the shop workers are getting so much shit from panic buyers, we need to just say THANK YOU to them.

Stay safe folks and wash your hands

I think a lot of things will be done via video. Even my doctors office is doing that for people who are high risk and don't feel safe going into the doctors office. Frankly, that should have been going on for years now if you ask me. I believe it was an insurance company thing. Now they probably don't have a choice.

We did a sort of happy hour via Facetime with our friends last night and then with my family. :) lmao...I'm pretty sure no one is really getting out of pajamas or work out clothes.

I saw that. There was a video but apparently it was fake. :(

Sorry for going on about things , but as you say-What are we doing , now its all happening.
Well, I have reinstalled all my Windows on fresh harddrives, and am going into making iso's of them, before adding all the crap that I tend to, and using the vhd 's to load stuff on- always meant to, but get carried way, like one does- so that I can replace easily. I have made vhd's, and now..
I chatted to the guvnor (The missus) andI get a list of litte jobs that need doing, (nothing heavy, though) and I have mowed our massive 4m x 6 m lawn, at the rear of our little bungalow, then fixed the shower utensil holder that fell off...Sharpened all the knives, and as we all know, all them little niggly jobs that would be done tomorrow (tomorrow never comes)
So, we will keep looking for those jobs, and plod on, as one does at 78 years old, but come back to play on my computer in between.
Try not to be too booring, and reemember that the missus is suffering if I play computers too much, as time flows by, and we have to remember to talk to each other between geeking, or studying /reading up new things- like different engines that could be in use , as I have mentioned in another post a while ago.
So much one can turn their mind to, and do- Irarely get bored, but we have to find ways to keep a bit of fitness-no doubt like you all-as we will find we are introuble after the ball, if we don't do a bit of exercise, and become too much of couch potatoes. Although we all have our own little nagging parts from years of wear and tear, we have to find a way- I wish I could walk more, but ankles too bad for much, but at least a walk around the block keeping well clear of others can help, but still a worry because of the virus and self-isolation needs.
    All the best

Okay. So, I've been in quarantine for about a week now. I will have to remain in quarantine until I'm symptom free. Some days our little one has been able to go to daycare because my wife has a critical job (MD), other days he had too much snot so we had to keep him at home. Looks like he's got a bit of an ear infection, poor guy.

Me personally, I'm completely in quarantine. On a typical day I only see my wife and the kid. Our offices has forced everyone to work from home, but there's not much left to do, so a lot of time is spent just being a dad or watching series/movies and playing games I hadn't had the chance to recently. For exercise I have a home gym that I used before. Which is nice because just sitting around doing nothing really messes with your head and health. This way I can keep exercising without infecting anyone else.
To still see a bit of the world, I go on random car cruises. Of course with everything closed, and I get in the car through the garage so no human contact there either. Lots of facetiming with my parents(-in law) and other family and friends to keep somewhat in touch.

I have to admit, this is boring as.... Of course doesn't help that I'm also worrying about my wife who's got to treat all those infected but without proper isolation equipment. It's nigh on inevitable that she'll get it at some point. I just hope it's a mild infection at that point. I also hope we don't get Italian circumstances here, but I doubt it.

@baklogic No worries. Sounds like if there is some kind of silver lining going on, it's that people are getting the things done they didn't have time for before. Maybe even talking to each other more. We cut down and removed about 3 small scrub trees from our backyard. We have woods behind us so just took them back there. Today we will be taking everything out of the garage and organizing it (probably throwing a lot out). We have been talking about doing that for the last year and a half. Keep yourselves away from people and stay safe. :)

@fleppen So you have it?? Are you able to be near your wife and child? When did you get it?

As far as exercise. Thank god for our indoor cycle. I don't have any excuses. Plus I go hiking when it's nice over at Valley Forge Battleground which is near our house which I think if totally awesome. :D

I most likely have it. This deserves some explanation: our CDC-brother does not test you if you have the symptoms (which I do), they are relatively mild (they are thankfully) and you have had contact with people who have been to at-risk locations (I have, my colleagues went skiing in Italy and Austria very shortly before the big outbreak in Italy). So, they don't test. They simply call me 'corona positive' and that's that. There's also the question of the test sensitivity, which is not great to say the least.

I am quarantined at home, so I'm with wife and child. We suspect the little one was the first to get it actually. He had a bout of fever and snot that lasted a couple of days and that was it. About two weeks later my symptoms started. As of right now, we don't have a quarantine protocol at home, but as soon as my wife is called up to ICU duty, we will separate our lives momentarily. Our little one will go to his godparents (my sister-in-law) at that time so as to protect him as much as possible. (Neither of them works in a hospital or with infected patients so he should be safe.)

Sorry to hear you have it. I actually don't know anyone yet who does. I'm sure I will. Wishing you and your family the best.

The testing sounds like the same here. We are short on tests so they are for the most part limiting them to people who work in health care and those who have severe cases with breathing issues. Personally I think that's how it should be. My dr's office just sent an email out in response to the people that are healthy who think one of the limited tests should be used on them.

Stop asking to be tested. Instead, pretend you test positive.

    It is that simple.

I get dozens upon dozens of pleas from desperate parents and patients looking to be tested. EVERYONE has a great reason: roommate was positive, she needs to get to work, he has asthma, we live with my aging parents.

    Here is the bottom line.

1.There are still not enough tests but that is improving every day.

    2. There is not enough protective gear. There is no sign that is getting better any time soon.

    3. A positive test changes NOTHING if you are doing what you should be doing anyway.

Every single time we do a test, we take a kit away from a healthcare worker or a critically ill patient that MUST be tested. We must don a mask, gown and goggles to do that test. That removes one pile of protective equipment from a doctor, nurse, respiratory therapist, pharmacist that needs it.

Lastly, think it through. Your kid is home. He is at higher risk because of all of the above. We do the test. It is positive. What then??

That person goes into a STRICT 14 day QUARANTINE.
They monitor their temperature every six hours.
EVEN if they become sick (fever cough) AND we know they are positive for COVID-19. What does that change?

    Nothing.

We do not have a treatment(yet.) Things would only change if the illness became severe--shortness of breath, worsening cough etc etc. These would be symptoms requiring assessment.

In my practice the vast majority of people requesting testing are young, healthy but have a high risk of exposure.

I understand fear. We will monitor any patient with suspected COVID as closely as possible --check-ins daily even. Remember, 95% of people that are young and healthy get sick and get better. Their biggest danger is the one they pose to others.

Which brings me to the last point.

Quarantining is hard, isolating, and inconvenient. But, honestly, too bad. If we all just stayed home for not just 14 days but until FURTHER notice, we could actually make a difference here.

Last week, I used my ONE mask which I have had for three days. I wrapped myself up in an over-sized patient gown and put two pairs of normal gloves on to examine a very ill pregnant woman in her car. That night, I stripped in the laundry room of my house before hugging my kids.

Is it really fair to "demand" testing because a quarantine is too hard?

Stop asking for testing. Pretend you got the test and it was positive. What would you do?? Do that. Please.

Not sure about prisons (people after they are convicted), but many jails (those awaiting trial or serving short sentences) are letting out many or all non-violent offenders with no bail money required.

The idea is to create some semblance of social distancing in what is basically a sardine can with bars on it. Bluntly, it also cuts government cost and liabilities if (when?) the bad boys and girls start dropping like flies.

We are in a 21-day lockdown. And yesterday a main waterpipe burst! I'm returning the toiletpaper.
All we (don't) need now is loadshedding...

Hummmm ...appears to be. I think she was just trying to get us to understand that they are under 21 day lock down with police AND military enforcement.

I haven't seen police officers or vehicles all day. But, how long before people become frustrated?
It's going to be a long 3 weeks...

We are concerned because Ali is not a citizen so only Vickus is venturing out to find food and supplies. Shelves are bare!!! All his income is gone during this time!
