I recently installed some new security software on my pc because I was not satisfied with the previous one I had. (resource hog) I updated the new software and did a scan. It did not detect any malware (viruses, trojans, etc.), however it did say that a few of the files on my hard drive were "corrupted". Can someone explain what this means exactly ? Thanks.

It may mean that sectors of your hard drive are failing ...and therefore the files in that sector are messed up.

Open My Computer / right click the C: drive / properties / tools / error checking and check both boxes ...you will be prompted to restart your computer to run the tool ...do so and watch for the error messages (sectors that are damaged) as it scans.

Thanks TimW for the speedy reply. Yeah, I've done what you suggested before and didn't see any error messages. Do you think a Reformat/Reinstall of the hard drive & OS would remedy this ? I was gonna do one anyway because my pc is nearly 4 years old and hasn't had one yet. I'm running XP Home, 1G RAM, 80G HD. Thanks again.

What files were reported as corrupted and by what program?
