Corrupted Files

    Hello
My wife's laptop and my desktop are almost identical. When I run SFC very occasionally on each, I have corrupted files yet she does not. The errors vary so I won't detail them now. Are there any habits of mine that could account for my problem?
I have to recover an image to become whole again.
I used to be able to run the DISM commands especially HEALTH but it no longer fixes it.
I recently read that an update caused some problems with corruption but again I am the only one affected. I wish I could give you specifics but right now I am just asking for a suggestion that might save me from corrupting files.
I use my PC much, much more than she does. She emails and browses while I watch PC videos and engage in forums to learn.
    TY
    Peter

What kind of corruption errors are you seeing? If you are using Vista or above, you can get a copy of the latest sfc on the desktop and then zip and post the log. Maybe that would get some discussion going about what is leading to your PCs woes...

Here is the command prompt (administrator command->right click command prompt and select run as administrator) command to have the log placed on your desktop:

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

If you are in XP, the errors show up in Event Viewer in the System category. They labelled Windows File Protection under the Source header...

I knew I should have waited until I could get the details. If you read my first post you will see why.
I have since imaged back to when SFC ran OK. I will place details here if and when.
I read a forum that had a way to fix it. It is new and supersedes SFC and any DISM command. It is a zip file which includes health that you click on. I could not understand it. It is either in Win 7 or Win 10 forum. I am running Win 10 x 64 just for your information.
I will run SFC soon and show the details.

That's really interesting, thanks for the information. I hadn't heard at all about this zip file for W10. I always thought SFC was a cool tool, so I guess I just go for this kind of thing. Most of my experience with sfc has been with Windows XP. In XP, I know it scans the dllcache and replaces corrupted files there. Also, I know it repairs some Explorer.exe settings. This I know because it used to wipe out the theme patch I was using to install 3rd party themes in XP. I have read somewhere here on MGs that some common ordinary behaviors can lead to sfc errors. Can't recall who created the post, but apparently some of them are harmless.

Just one question on the zip. Is it from MS or from a 3rd party. Just curious about this a little bit.

I am just going to guess that the zip automatically copies some files into places where they are supposed to be? That's what sfc does, so it seems like a decent enough guess to me...

The link is to a script that runs sfc and dism commands to save you having to type them in. It does not provide any additional capabilities and everything it does can be done from the command line with sfc and dism - if you know how of course ;)

I was trying the process with .ESD + it requires .WIM.
When both SFC + DISM(Health) failed, this fixed the corruption. You know better so it likely is a different point of view.

Anyway peter, thanks for posting the link - I've finally got got an error free sfc scan on my laptop's 8.1 using the script. If you have several hours to spare and another computer you can use in the meantime it's the easy way to deal with unrepairable file errors following an sfc scan. It's not that there was anything obviously wrong with my 8.1 but it's nice to know everything is now as it should be.
