OK here's the deal. My computer is not recognizing my DVD burner or my CD-ROM drive. When I go to to Device Manager they show up but have a Code 19 error message (Corrupted Registry). I've gone in and uninstalled the hardware, physically unhooked them and restarted with no success. I've gone in and updated the permissions in the registry, no success. Finally I uninstalled the drives, physically unhooked them and deleted the registry files in the system folder for both of the drives. After a reboot the registry files are rebuilt again but they still show the code 19 error message.

This system has been running fine for several months now with no issues. It is running Win2K Pro with the latest service pack and I've never had any issues with my CD/DVD drives until now. I was even was working off of the CD ROM drive earlier in the day before everything went belly up.

    Some other things I've done:

    Run myDoom virus scan
Download and run various registry scan/cleaners
    Run AdWare
Tried to run a registry repair tool from MicroSoft but the boot disks didn't work

Funny thing is that the system runs flawless except for the drives not being there.

    HELP!!

    Drives: NEC DVD-RW, Lite-on CD-ROM x48
    Specs just in case:
    ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
    120 Gig Maxtor
    Giel 512 RAM
    AMD 1700 oc'ed to 2.035 mhz 185x11
    eVGA Nvida 5900SE 128mb
    400w power supply

A few days ago I installed the lastest updates for Roxio's Easy CD Creator, which also had a driver update tool I ran as well. The drives worked fine for a couple days afterwards.

Is this possibly a Hardware problem? (i.e. bad IDE cable)

One quick question......... What search parameters did you use when finding that information? I couldn't find anything on registry repair which may have applied.

OK it worked fine, but yet again I have one question. If it isn't a corrupted registry why did I have to alter the registrys key values to get everything to work?

My biggest complaint is with Mircslop and thier awful support. I spent hours trying to find out what was wrong based on feedback from the help files and the online links. Hell this particular problem has been an issue (according to the date on the supplied links) since Sept last year and I have to know what exactly I'm looking for to get help! It shouldn't be that difficult.

Well thanks all and I'm sorry I killed a few kittens, but that's OK with me cause I don't like cats. :p

Because you installed incompatible cd writing software.

Only the last incarnation of Roxio 5.x was compatible.

What you were removing from the registry were the keys being used to load their drivers with your cd drive.
