Hello to everybody. Hope someone can help. Already posted in software column, but may be malware caused. System Restore has went AWOL. Just get message that "System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close" Start,Run,services.msc shows automatic and started. When I go to computer properties, get some message about "Run HAL as a Dll". Have tried everything people there have suggested. No help. Avira Anti Vir shows clean. So does Spybot S&D,SAS,Blacklight(root-kits),and a2 squared. No infections show. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

It is unlikely that this is related to malware. I suggest that you continue to work in the Software Forum. You should also do the below:

Click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System Rile Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

Thanks for response chaslang. Tried sfc /scannow as suggested. After more than 1/2 hour, no response from system. Just hung there. System Restore will not even run in Safe Mode. Am at complete loss. Taking advice and going back to software section. Just covering bases by trying here.

Hello chaslang. I did get this problem resolved. I bought a new OEM disk, reformatted my drive and did a fresh install. New disk came with SP3 preinstalled(1 way to upgrade). Had all programs I wanted to install copied on USB stick. Install XP Home, all programs wanted, updated all defensive programs took maybe 1 hour. Wasted more than that pulling my hair out over that problem. Appreciate the advice though.Thanks.:wave
